I want to tell my mom about this sub so badly. She doesn’t reddit so I know she won’t sit down and read the handbook. Trying to think of how I can casually bring it up in conversation and also not make it seem like I’m criticizing her.

Same for me; except my father is in my life and he’s undoubtedly the best man my mom has dated. I wouldn’t say he’s a HVM, but he has wonderful qualities. I shudder to think who I would have ended up with if he hadn’t been a strong influence in my life because all the other men she didn’t were total POS I also think you’re spot on about learning how to spot alcoholics and violent men. And for my also con artists. I can smell bs from a mile away

I was the other woman but didn’t find out until later. The first time, I was about 18 years old. This guy was about 5 years older than me and told me him and his girl were in an open relationship. (That turned out to be a lie). Honestly I kept going to him out of loneliness on and off for about 2 1/2 years until finally one day things came to a head and I told him I wanted a relationship with him, which he obviously didn’t want. I needed to read this today. After ending a 5 year relationship a month ago, I’m definitely feeling this way.

I struggle with this also. Often my mind just goes blank in a conflict because I’m so used to shutting down. It’s a trauma response.

I used to be FWB with a guy like this back in the day. He was an actual POS towards me in private, but no one would believe it. Yuck. I’m so glad he’s out of my life and honestly glad he turned me down when I asked him to be in a real relationship.

“The guy who asked permission to hold my hands (at 27) turned out to be my best kiss.” This gives me warm fuzzies
