I cried at my grandfather's funeral, as well as the morning he died. Cried a few times right after the funeral when I wanted to ask him stuff but I couldn't because he is dead. Thought after ten years I was cool with it, then cried in a feed store in my 20s, over ten years later. I am 32 with a tattoo of his cattle brand. It has been only been a few years since I cried about his death, and am sure I could if I pondered it. Not sure why I told you this, aside from just missing my friend.

I will assume that by your terminology of calling it "English Class", you're in high school. You will find a lot of the thinking you just ran into will go away as people grow older. There will always be people who are insecure and can't handle the idea of their own masculinity and security being called into question when another man around begins to cry. Those people are easily avoided if you make good life decisions and make friends that match your beliefs. The answer to your question though is…

If the mother in this situation really was hard on this girl she could have convinced her that her dad did the things he did. Kids will believe what you tell them to.

That's a lot of years to have passed. I would think by age 15 or 16 she knew what she had done was really really wrong. I would like to know what series of events transpired to get her to go in and admit lying.
