Yeah I’m confused as well, but I’ve always had OP’s same mentality. Society thinks you’re an awful person if you don’t tip. Tipping is employers putting the onus of wages (in addition to the service, ie waiting a table), not on themselves but on the patron. I noticed this myself a while back. Particularly hilarious after a church service - watch all those people who just sat through an hour of alleged self-betterment stampede to be the first in line for donuts followed by the exact no-door-holding behavior you just described.
