My daughter wanted guinea pigs at her moms. I told her they could only visit on special occasions but we have to plan it. Just like my dog....it doesn't go back and forth between houses. The ex wanted them to come every time. When I said not my problem the guinea pigs lasted at her house about three months before their untimely death.

And if she buys you out of the house you need to add a clause that she has to refinance within a certain time period and remove you from the mortgage. Don't let her pay your loan.

Take this under consideration....I had a joint investment account and it was "transferred" to my wife to buy her out of the house. After the divorce, she traded the stock while it was still a joint account triggering a tax liability under my social security number. It took a lot of forms, time and discussions with the IRS to get it worked out.just be mindful of how anything is transferred.

Agreed. The OP should consider taking a leave of absence from work due to health or find another job with fewer responsibilities (lower pay) and force the issue for his wife to work. Unless the money in your other accounts are assets prior to the marriage then it's going to be split. Do this for at least two years and then divorce. Your contribution to the marriage should mirror hers.

One more thought regarding the dermatologist issue. Most decrees give the right for routine medical decisions - non-invasive. You don't have to ask for her opinion or for agreement. Set the appointment and go. Ignore the noise from her.

If she's controlling then imagine giving her full medical decision power. Taking your child to a doctor for a skin condition is reasonable and a judge would see it that way. Don't negotiate away your existing decree without getting something you really want in return. If she presses the issue go to court and ask for full control. Just because she filed a lawsuit doesn't mean much until they file for a court date. I had a lawsuit for almost two years. Know that every so often you will have to pay…

If you have an existing decree I would not do it. Does she have the financial resources to actually take you to court? Has there been a significant change? Are you having issues over medical decisions where you can't agree?

In the great state of Texas there's no alimony. You will have to split your retirement or any investment accounts (from the time of the marriage) as well as any debt. Don't buy anything new or get her pregnant. If she has access to your accounts....create new accounts. This should be a simple exit.

It sounds like you don't have a decree yet. You now know how she's going to act with expenses. Medical is typically 50:50. When you do your decree add specific language as what you will or won't pay. The list should be very short. Make sure you include that it has to be mutually agreed in writing prior to the expense. This wouldn't apply to medical but think about sports or activities. Mine wanted to purchase a 500 pair of glasses. I said it was excessive and she backed down but technically she …

Do the divorce and get out while you have nothing to lose - even if you have to do the work. If your circumstances change and you have assets she gets half. I get that you are married for life but this could cost you significantly later.

My daughter is 15 and she has had the same transition. We used to do everything but now it more limited. Their friends are very important at this age. I try to be the home base for meals, daily activities and such. Yes the time is limited but make the most of it. Drive across town to a special coffee shop. Sit and drink. Connect. Regardless if she's completely focused on her friends. She knows you are there and that's what's important.

It's really important to determine who controls the college fund. It should just one parent. If need be I would suggest splitting the funds at the time of divorce. She can control her half and you can control yours. Otherwise you are forced to agree on how and when to spend it or go to court to resolve it. Yes she may piss it away but you protect half. The 529 does not have to be a joint account. I would also make it clear to her and the kids that you plan to help for "x" number of years of coll…

After the divorce my ex would buy things and send me the bill even though we had a clause that stated it must be mutually agreed upon. When we had a modification to the decree, I added language that states other than the listed expenses (yes we listed a handful) neither party has a right to request payment. The asking for things has slowed but makes for an easy "please refer to the decree".
