I work on base and have worked with military for years. It can be a good decision if you get in the right spot and make a career of it. After 20 years in, you can retire and have a guranteed income. Not enough on its own but its something. Also you get access to health care as well. Once retired you get a preference for any military job openings as a contractor or GS employee. I really don't get why you wouldn't want them to join. I work on an air force base and most of the jobs I see that needs to be done can be filled out by women. You don't need a dude to process a CAC, or do records keeping, or a thousand other jobs. Maybe it's different with the other branches but I don't see the issue when most of the jobs are support.

I had a compromise purchased light SUV when I was married. Hated that damn thing. After the divorce, I traded it in for the car I wanted and to get my payments down a little. I still owed a most of the years on it and I got in a wreck which lowered the value. Because of this I was $1000 dollars in the hole compared to what I owed on it. Traded it anyway. Been real happy ever since, even with the financial hit. The point is maybe the best financial decision is not always the best decision.
