Then you did negotiate. This is exactly what you're supposed to do. There are other ways to be paid than just salary. There's a video lecture from a Harvard MBA professor, and one of his messages to his students is to give the company many different ways to pay you. Extra salary is nice, but you can also negotiate: the city you work in, vacation, health insurance, bus or parking passes, continuing education, or a flexible schedule, just to name a few things

I think part of the problem is a lot of people, even educated people, take probabilities as certainties. Specifically I remember Nate Silver's coverage of the 2012 presidential election: Silver would release a report that said something like this--"If event X happens, Romney has a 70% chance of winning the election." Or: "If event Y happens, Obama has an 81% chance of winning the election." Which was then reported as: "If X happens, Romney will win. If Y happens, Obama will win." No, CNN, Fox, A…
