Also, a subreddit is not "society". It's a group, and you can find hundreds of thousands of groups where entry is selective. Also, most “other branches of government” are included in the U.S.’s military funding. There are several projects anf agencies that aren't part of "military funding" but would benefit a lot from military personnel being trained into servoce for them. For example, the US could do with updating its infrastructure, a project that would definitely have positive impact on GDP growth. I do. I firmly believe that there is a significant possibility that a US citizen is more informed about what exactly is going on in the US than I am. Does that mean they can't be wrong? No, course not, but I also don't go around assuming I know more about their politics than they do. Alright, fair enough. I have no experience im hiring for CS, so I'm not going to argue, if it really was so that you guys only got 2 applicants in 18 years. In any case, you shouldn't be expecting a 50/50 split in applicants when the field doesn't get split evenly anyway on terms of who studies it. I'd say that depends on what standard we're looking at. As a metaphor: I could go to Domino's and get a pizza that's okay. There wouldn't be obvious problems with it. But if I looked for flaws, I could definitely find some and justify wanting a better pizza like someone else has gotten. In other words, "looking" isn't a giveaway per se, but you are right that it does implicitly give ground to the opposition. But that's assuming you're arguing to win rather than to come to some actual truths.
