I never intended to be condescending but it was easy to understand how what I wrote could be taken that way. Good luck learning English bro, I'm usually one of those scumbags who complains about America a lot but I'm legitimately grateful that English is my first language because it seems hard af to learn.

I can tell just fine. The man in the OP means money. I am 100,000% sure of this and, again, I am a native speaker. EDIT: Also in that Beatles lyric, they are again referring to money when they use the word 'paper'.

An example of 'this' being used in the same way (it's quite common in slang): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAFGTOhfR7Y The 'this' doesn't need to be referring to anything nearby as you might expect. In fact, were 'this' omitted from the phrase, the meaning of the phrase wouldn't change at all.

I am a native speaker and I disagree with all of the definitions you found. Paper is slang for money. Paper chasing being a 'safe alternative' to entrepreneurship in particular I take issue with. Chasing paper can be safe (like getting a job, being an entrepreneur, etc) or unsafe (selling drugs, committing robbery, etc). There's no inherit morality or safety in the phrase. If you chase paper, you chase money. What in particular that entails is not implied by the phrase.
