And the messaging in many of those campaigns was LITERALLY "man up"

A modest brass (not pot metal) double edge handle and simple nylon brush will last a lifetime, a tube of Proraso soap (not P&G or J&J owned) will easily last a year, and mid tier blades are ten cents each so buy them by the few hundreds. Save huge money compared to cartridge razors, and forget about subscriptions.

Describing predominantly black male youth as conscience-less superpredators is clearly not describing things 'as they were', and I don't think it's forgivable in a political candidate. If that's your point then I don't think we are in agreement.

It includes mens' rights if and only if you kneel at the altar of its gatekeepers, and the issues you care about will always be of secondary importance. Humanitarianism is a fundamentally different concept. If this were as simple as unmet needs, we wouldn't be asking for changes to law and policy.

I think feminism was originally concerned about women's rights. I don't think it was a reaction to anything other than women's right to vote or build a career. You are so close to actually understanding the very simple point I'm trying to make, which is simply that men's rights exists independently from feminism. It is not a purely reactionary movement, never was a purely reactionary movement, and has plenty of overlapping goals. I just don't understand that logic. It's like saying that if the h…

Keep in mind you're having a conversation with two different people. I never made claims to validity. You hypothesized that the men's right's movement is a reactionary counter-movement to feminism. I'm saying that if feminism had never been a thing, mens' rights issues would still be affecting us, and we would still be trying to address them. Had our society decided en masse prior to the inception of feminism that it's wrong to force men into battle where they were sure to die, mutilate them as …

I don't think the men's rights movement is necessarily a reaction to feminism at all. Almost all of the issues we face existed long before feminism did. The only difference is that we never had a "liberation", and virtually nothing has changed for us with regard to cultural and legal recognition of our issues in over a hundred years.

There's a good reference of men's issues in the sidebar. Point I was trying to make is that feminism and patriarchy theory are usually a package deal. MRAs in general don't subscribe to an equivalent unifying theory that explains the shit outcomes many men deal with, so it's inappropriate to say that they are similar in ideology.
/r/MensRights14/12/20 06:21 PM

If they were really similar in ideology, wouldn't MRAs be claiming that their problems are a result of 'the matriarchy'?

I think it's fine to express a preference for types of clothes. I think it's also fine to wear whatever you want. I like wearing shorts with an even shorter inseam, and some women wouldn't be seen with me. It's okay, I won't bother dating those women.

cis = genitalia matches gender identity straight = F attracted to M or M attracted to F man = anyone's guess There are a lot of women nowadays who simultaneously refuse to be judged or put in boxes but also generalize men to extremes and have very strong opinions on how they should be and act. Well, I'm sad to report that it is a challenge being an unmasculine straight cis man. And it also wasn't a choice. I didn't choose my personality any more than she did.

What if you, the men, looked to traditional feminine traits and tried incorporating them into your masculinity? What if I told you I was a girly boy growing up, and was an outcast as a result? Because that was my reality. Let's talk about the consequences that boys and men face when they refuse to perform traditional masculinity, which girls and women largely don't when they step up to the plate and lean in. How about you try pretending that you're the least powerful person in any room, and that…

It's some seriously fucked up shit. Just imagine a sensory part of your body is taken from you before you're old enough to say 'no', ground up and cultured, packaged into a product and sold to serve some ignorant vanity. Your damaged sexuality is literally smeared on womens' faces. The thought of this should be infuriating to any human being. The fact that it isn't, that it can be done on daytime TV without social consequence says it all. I don't think I could write more creative horror.

/r/wicked_edge is a good resource. You can get razors and blades on amazon, ebay, pretty much wherever. I recommend getting a simple razor made of nickel-plated brass or stainless steel in the $20-30 range, a nylon brush (cheap boar brushes smell), and generic soap. Technique is everything, take it slow and don't go nuts.

She feels wronged, and rightfully so. Why should she individually feel like she shares guilt for the stuff that men deal with in divorce? That's the same sort of original sin bullshit that feminists like to trot. It would be "her own medicine" if she were some vocal proponent of alimony, but there's no evidence of that.

Which same women? I don't see any indication that the women affected by this are feminists or bloodsuckers. I just see a fucked up system that's hurting people. The feminist narrative of this post is: society only cared about her looks, so the patriarchy allowed her to float along without really having to try, and she became "The Girl". It's clear that some of these people simply won't advocate for boys. While that's shitty, it doesn't change the fact. /r/feminism mods exercise their moderator privileges arbitrarily, without regard to the rules of that sub. I used to participate, but one day was banned out of the blue. Ramkissoon told us she’s suspended indefinitely and hasn’t been contacted by the hospital. “I’ve been indeed suspended,” she said, “and I don’t even know when I’m going to get back to work. I’m getting a lawyer and a public-relations firm, but I don’t know if it’s going to do any good. “I’m not sure I deserve what’s happening. But I don’t want to talk any more. Again, you're pro-feminist, and utterly unlikely to be critical of feminism, even when it's harming swaths of people. So yea, you'll have great conversations with like minded people. I am simply not a pro-feminist. Great. Start one. It would be even more "men's lib-y" than men's lib is. But regardless, with that constraint you'll never be able to get at the core of the vast majority of male issues and how they're treated, both culturally and via policy, because feminism literally is the largest …

I had three-figure comment karma in /r/Feminism and a lot of healthy conversation with members of that sub, before I was banned by a trigger-happy mod for saying something so utterly uncontroversial that I can't even remember what it was. Whatever it was, it was not a violation of the rules. I would like to start a community that isn't pro-feminism, or anti-feminism, but bans the discussion of feminism entirely. I'm not so concerned about right way versus wrong way, I just see it a different type of forum with maybe less noise. for any group claiming to help men Are they really a group though? It seems way looser than that. I like to think of it as a conversational filter. I don't have to agree with the basis for the rules to participate and find value in participating. For good or for bad, it's no true scots[wo]man. Can self-professed feminists be great people with good judgement and general benevolence towards men and their rights? Sure, and I'd think most of them probably are. But the term was and is murky at best, and it comes with a lot of baggage and assumptions that may or may not hold. Take your pick of definitions, it has been argued to death and nobody has won that war yet.

Salvation Army Captain Michael Cox says the organization has a longtime policy that prohibits boys ages 12 to 16 from staying at the shelter. According to Cox, the policy is in place for safety reasons; ultimately to protect children. What is a shelter for, again? Last I checked, kids aged 12-16 were still kids. Cox says space limitations at the shelter do not allow the building to house maturing boys. 'Maturing boys' must really take up a lot of space, then? What a weasel.

As individuals, we can only reliably count on ourselves for defense of person. Is that responsibility? If so, that responsibility has been outsourced in many peoples' minds to the police, or to a boyfriend or husband, or pitchfork-carrying mob, which I think is what bothers feminists who get caught up in agency the most. Toxic Femininity This is the first I've seen this term, and capitalized no less. Is this actually a thing? Serious question: Do you get upset when gender feminists talk of "Toxic Masculinity"? "Phallus" is latin for penis. I only used the term for consistency's sake. And yes, penectomy would be the proper term for its removal. Of course it never had anything to do with public health, or efficacy. Circumcision has always been a solution in search of a problem. In the victorian era, it was about damaging the genitals in the attempt to eliminate masturbation. Now, it's the tens of millions of dollars being dispensed to contractors to perform the operation. And consent of adults is one thing, but there are quite a few boys being coerced into this as well by well meaning, ignorant parents, and predatory ad campaigns which …

Circumcision is known to reduce a man's risk of HIV infection by at least half, but scientists don't know why. It iis known. Dwyer said CAFE uses the label “men’s issues” rather than “men’s rights” because the latter “implies legal changes are necessary. It implies that there are rights exclusive to men, which we don’t believe is true.” How about we put it this way: There are legal rights and privileges exclusive to women that boys and men do not enjoy, which do necessitate legal change. The demons we face extend past the social constructs, and it's a huge disservice to us to insist that they don't.

Read their page on FGM. Take note of the perspective from which it is written, and the citations. Surprise, surprise! It's the World Health Organization! The very same one which promotes circumcision of male children in those very same countries! Some gems: Ahlam is a living example of girls who have been coerced into the practice and live regretting why they had to undergo a process that has not only lowered her personal esteem, notwithstanding the fact that it also denied her the opportunity t…

I don't find it objectionable. But as much as it's important call out sexism when it's found, the sheer volume and repetition is crowding out much of the other content. It has a place, but I don't think that place is here. It's sensational, but I'll challenge you, where is the value in it? We all nod our heads that it's not okay. Maybe some of us run off to complain to the appropriate parties. Where does that leave us in the grand scheme of things? I'd argue that it leaves us right where we are,…

That only really holds if you equate feminism with liberation, but of course from a rhetorical point of view, it's all teed up. Though even if you take it at face value (like /u/soylentcoleslaw points out) it doesn't logically follow.

I'm an primarily an intactivist, and men's rights activist (in at least the dictionary sense, for as long as there's no cancerous ideology attached) by extension and association. If you haven't been directly involved in the movement, you might be surprised to find that women are probably a decent 50%, maybe more, of our constituency. They are also very often even more vocal in their advocacy. I think a lot of it has to do with the way society perceives men who are complaining. People are hostile…

It's also semantically correct - just as some victims of rape die or kill themselves, so too do victims of genital mutilation. Sure, the general public may scoff. But then you can point them to people like David Reimer and the thousands and thousands of infants that have died or lost their penises for no justifiable reason.

No, the basis of censorship would be suppression of information that I think is objectionable. I am arguing instead that syndication of sexism examples (the dime a dozen screen shots from twitter / facebook / 4chan / tumblr) which aren't new or notable or even thought-provoking shouldn't take priority over notable events, real activism, selfposts asking for help, and so on. That balance is important, because currently that's all a casual subscriber to this sub sees. People opposed to the movemen…

Is the language in the bill gendered? It was my impression that the provisions were not. If that's the case, it's maybe less sexist, but then the title is inaccurate. Either way, I have a hard time understanding how women, especially feminists, are okay with this bill as named. Positive sexism is still sexism.

If it were so simple or so intuitive, then parents wouldn't have allowed doctors to mutilate their kids for the past century. That's fine. Sorry people downvoted your (in my opinion) valid question. I tried to offset it a bit. This is a hot topic for a lot of people, and playing devil's advocate isn't usually done from a neutral standpoint. Parents' primary role is to protect the child from harm, self-harm included. What I'm arguing for is not total physical autonomy. I'm simply arguing for a child's inalienable right to keep all his healthy body parts. A foreskin is not a disease.
/r/MensRights12/02/13 04:18 AM

Check your foreskin priv! Um, I don't have one? That's the fucking point. The law protects girls from genital mutilation. It doesn't protect boys. You'll find that every once in a while, groups you associate with will take up an issue you don't care about. And if you don't give a fuck about it, then whyyyy are you posting? The right to genital integrity definitely falls under men's rights. Suggestion: If you consider yourself an atheist and you're cool with organizations that actively support the Christian anti-gay lobby, or an MRA and feel that a child doesn't have the right to his own body... then perhaps you ought to re-evaluate whether you are either of those things.

It's an interesting thing to consider. I approached this thinking that it's not malicious - the intent isn't to harm. But really, the intent is to harm. That's the whole point, although it's not framed as harm by those doing it. So this is malicious in the same way as is, for example, a witch hunt. Those taking part are scared of something (demons, witches, satan; smegma, social rejection, masturbation, a child not looking like daddy) and see it as a moral imperative to remove the threat.

The best part is that one of the two women is putting her support behind this guy. Big thumbs up to her for doing the right thing.

Patriarchy is something that exists. The idea that men are the head of households and lots of gender based issues do stem from this belief. One part is there seems to be this idea that men actively try to keep society this way. Maybe feminists need to re-evaluate their no-role-in-it model of how things have turned out. Because regardless of sheer numbers and of tendencies, women are absolutely enforcers in the status quo. My mother was hounding me the other night about not owning a car when dati…

I've seen it before. I'd bet from the female perspective it's lack of patience over time after being hit on or creeped on, justified or not. I think at least one of the few times a female attendant has been cold towards me, I must have looked hurt because her demeanor softened up a bit. Probably misinterpretation of intent, which makes friendly transactions nowadays kinda suck for everyone. Still, the above described has been relatively rare for me at least.

Women nowadays want to be treated as equals in public, but when it comes to having a partner, dominant alpha males are preferred. I think the problem is that it's hard to treat sexual attraction and other facets of everyday life the same. Women are just generally attracted to dominant men still, so it makes real gender equality hard to achieve. You're preaching to the choir here. This really sucks for people who outwardly display more or less masculine/gender-neutral traits, but are submissive i…

What they are is a normative force to help keep the sub from radicalizing or just becoming a shitpost mill talking about why we should never trust anyone with different genitalia. What separates the concern trolling from the legitimate attempts are calls to stay relevant, rational and mature. I did upvote the referenced quote earlier today - it's damn funny. In retrospect, it has very little to do with Men's Rights, and would probably fit better in a sub devoted to good-natured ribbing of the ov…

Dude, I did not mean to offend you by suggesting that your actions in that situation weren't warranted - it's clear to me that they were. I was speaking only with the assumption of an otherwise nonviolent relationship that simply did not work out. Peace

Being broken up with is not duress, and it's recognized that judgment in both sexes suffers in actual cases of duress. Yes, the legal system is fucked up and biased against men when it comes to things like this, but that doesn't make it reasonable to presume that an otherwise sane person will become violent just because you're breaking up with them. If a feminist were advocating the same treatment, we would be harshly criticizing them for it - and rightly so. I dig not wanting to get married. I'…

I was raised Catholic. People of "faith" love to make sweeping generalizations about entire genders and human sexuality, often attempting to reinforce convention. My CCD teacher told us that men in our "culture" were terrible. The quote I recall almost entirely is that every girl a guy sleeps with is "like another notch in his belt!!!!" Her heart was in the right place, but she went about it the entirely wrong way. Parents, choose wisely who you allow to teach your children. If you only make rel…

This advice really covers both genders, whenever you're involved with a bridge-burner. I am a straight guy and had a close male friend. Things got a little weird, and friend turned into stalker. He became verbally abusive, threatened my life, tried to get me fired, and on and on for two years after I stopped talking to him. Priority #1 should be to protect yourself. A lot of the time, it's not obvious what's happening until it's too late. At that point, your best option usually is to cease conta…

There have been truly great female inventors and scientists. Sure there are people who will make lists like this for political reasons. But I'd be willing to bet that the best scientists are simply proud of being good scientists. No reason to hate on them unless they're being assholes.

All the non-cut guys I know have had no issues... warm water only to clean and takes three seconds. I would think pain during sex is a sign of something more serious. Frankly, I don't fucking care what women think. I find the very idea that this factored into the decision my parents made repugnant.

It's great that men are becoming sensitive to the power they exercise over women, and hold it in check. Are you seriously? They look at men like we're animals, make it inappropriate to express interest or give compliments, and then complain when the only attention they get is inappropriate. If you're wondering where the 'good guys' have gone, you've scared them all away. Feminists make finding a date suck for everyone.

Back in college while waiting in the keg line in a frathouse basement, I witnessed a comical (yet horrifying) situation unfold: A guy maybe 21, so drunk he was hanging onto a pipe for support, was being propositioned by a noticeably less drunk and less attractive woman. He was barely maintaining consciousness, and she was all over him. He was literally squirming around avoiding being embraced and saying "no....no" while doing his best to stay vertical. Eventually, an observant bystander noticed …

I do agree I should be more specific, and since commenter "C0CKPUNCHER" who made me feel compelled to make this selfpost identifies himself below, feel free to view the original thread in context The entire spirit of that submission was to call out when people make claims that one gender's issues are non-existent or less important than another's, and yet right there you have this poster making a hypocrite out of himself by ins…

What facts, exactly? What I'm advocating is that we don't stoop to the level of trivializing or judging inferior someone else's cause when it's a legitimate one. That doesn't mean allowing feminists to attack our rights unopposed, it means we don't compare the size of our respective wounds.

I understand fully how important it is that we stress the importance of our issues. But what are you doing when you say things like: You know what's worse than fgm. Suicide. Homelessness. Drug addiction. etc etc. Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time…one of the best videos of all time! Hmm. And if I didn't have empathy for male victims, I probably wouldn't have ridden the 1,500 down to New Orleans to protest the AAP. Because I…

It's not about competing for attention, it's about competing for importance. If that doesn't sound quite right, it's because it's not. I wouldn't trust men's issues to feminists anymore than I'd trust my motorcycle to a botanist.

You don't have to be timid to be respectful, and to avoid the same flawed arguments and myopic viewpoints that MRAs (myself included) criticize so many feminists for. I'm simply giving an example of an unhealthy behavior that I would hope you'd agree does no good for anyone.

Project less. I'm not a psychopath, I just feel the need to point out irrational arguments when I see them. 'Worse', in the absence of any criteria, is a generalized value judgement. The only place it holds true is in your own mind. Suicide is worse than fgm for the individual involved. Again, highly subjective and not at all a direct comparison. How about this: They're all bad, let's end them all.

Female genital mutilation. In countries like Indonesia, it's enforced by elder females who insist on it for the same fallacious arguments we hear for cutting boys in the US, and some we haven't heard for 50 years.

A hundred times this. You could play a game of bingo when you bring it up. It goes from "how dare you; NOT AS BAD AS" to "well I've never heard of a guy who was unhappy about it" (spoiler alert: they're about to) to "well that sure is a peculiar thing to get worked up about." Really? I'm the weird one for wishing I had the body I was born with? The one which should have belonged exclusively to me from birth onward? Protip feminists, if you want equality, do what you do best - call this out as th…

it wasn't cool when Cam Newton recently referred to a female reporter as "Sweetheart" during a press conference, and this is no better. In fact, there are many work environments in which this would officially constitute harassment. 'Sweetheart' is diminutive, maybe borderline disrespectful depending on tone / subtext / context, but calling it harassment is a stretch. Women 15+ years older than I am call me 'sweetie' all the time. I am a younger looking guy. I dread the day they start calling me …
