As I reflect on my past thinking - as well as my problematic instinctive thoughts today - I see how this happened. When women are skilled at the arts, there’s a tendency to see it as more quaint, by-the-numbers, “competent” yet too domestic to make an impact in any meaningful way. More like a hobby than a profitable skill. Men are judged differently. Global culture has always domesticated women’s skills, from cooking to singing, from tailoring to medicine. My favourite part was how Tuxedo Mask being useless became a running gag in the show. I can't remember, but there's one episode where they pointedly say he didn't contribute at all to the battle and he makes a hasty exit to retain what's left of his dignity.
