8	A Female 'Firefighter' Shows Why You'd Want a Man to Rescue You As a career firefighter, I just want physically capable coworkers. In my perfect world we would just shitcan everyone who would rather be fat, weak, out of shape and unfit for duty than meet the standard. It would be hard to tell a female who missed a push-up standard by a few reps that she can't work when we also have overweight/obese men who are equally as dangerous. 1	Woman To Become First FDNY Firefighter Who Failed Physical Fitness Test Several months ago the FDNY dropped the physical portion of the testing process as a requirement. FDNY Fire Commissioner Nigro said this: “We still grade the people. You can still fail it if you go beyond the time, but you’re not automatically failed from the program,” Soo, you can make up for physical shortcomings with academics. Just to throw some numbers out there a 24ft extension ladder weighs about 120-130 lbs. Now pull that off the truck and carry it on your shoulder (you're already wearing about 60lbs of gear) to the window where there is a civilian or firefighter trapt.
