My husband of 30 years cries when he’s gushing at a movie, he’s very emotional but only indulges it when it doesn’t harm anything else, I grew in a house with an immature father who had no self control over his emotions. He would either rage or when it was just he and my mom, cry, during arguments or any intense discussion. So in my relationship I used to do exactly the same thing. And when I did, the man who would become my husband refused to take the conversation further, to the extent that he…

My spouse and I met in college and much of our early relationship involved gaming together. You already have some great suggestions (we love Don’t Starve Together, Overcooked, Lovers in and Dangerous Spacetime and now he’ll play them without daughter), also I’d suggest looking into MMORPG’s that call to you -we spent several years playing City of Heroes together (although that one ended). Also much of our early relationship had us sitting together (often I was on his lap) playing puzzle adventur…

If you really want to get into the psychology, look into the Jungian idea of the puer aeternus, the eternal child. They all tend to have similar traits. Marie Louis Von Franz has a dry but excellent set of lectures published discussing the topic.

One of our happy discoveries is Altar’d State. They have some really beautiful clothes and the company had been a delight to deal with.

You could also look for a reproductive endocrinologist. They could give you a pretty comprehensive rundown of your fertility at least at this point in time.

Thank you. Sometimes life seems to throw you really loud messages. And it all made me a better person (I think).

Mobile really played with my formatting and lost some of my answers; hopefully this fixes it. Yes, I had a high paying financial tech job in NYC. 9/11 happened; I was at the towers for work just a few weeks before; 3 guys from my office died in the collapse -one of whom was a young kid of 21 and had just been telling me about his 6 month old the week before. I looked at my 5 hour daily commute, fading health from said commute plus 10 hour work days, and stress on my marriage, and decided to step…

Lol, you sound like me, honestly, although I'm older than you (46). I have always been too agreeable for my own good and when younger was terrible at advocating for myself. But I had a strong survival streak and a nasty bit of rage I inherited from a crappy father. That rage -when controlled- has really helped out. I'm still a little too agreeable and not always the best with advocating myself in gray, soft-pressure situations, especially with people I don't know as well. My husband and teen dau…

Pushy is one thing, touching me is something completely different. Someone grabs me my voice drops low, I let myself sound nasty and aggressive, and will say “LET GO OF ME NOW!” Stare them in the face with anger. Be angry. Not quite yelling but definitely loud. A command, not a request. And I’m normally a very quiet and soft spoken introvert with a high pitched voice. But I had to use my other voice a few times with men much bigger than me when I was an 18 year old graveyard shift waitress in a …

Don’t feel guilty, but do develop a thick skin. Those questions and comments will persist even after you have kids. I had the high paying, big city career in tech. When my husband finished his tech degree we decided I would stay home and prep the house for when we eventually had kids. We even moved across country to a place that was more of what we wanted in life and would make a single income home easier. All by our choice and our design and it makes us happy. Family, friends (albeit the sucky …

Senior national labs engineer wife - we met at college freshman year. He was cute and definitely smart, but a little geeky and definitely unfocused. However we come from families that had a similar toxicity and we both wanted to do so much better in life. That similar orientation -that most of our friends didn’t understand- is what kept me holding on even when we had bad times. That drive to keep improving stuck with us all these years (28 so far) and took us very far in every way (not just fina…

Not a problem. My husband is a recovering puer; he actually discovered this first and shared it with me. I’m happy to pass it along and I hope it helps -since they are lectures they can be a little much to take in all at once, but there’s some real gold in there. Feel free to message me if you have questions.

A really good source would be Marie Louis VonFranz. You can source The Problem of the Puer Aeternus. It a book comprised of a series of lectures that she did surrounding the topic. She also makes a lot of references to the life of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the author of The Little Prince since he’s a fairly clear cut example.

Have you considered sharing it with him? I mean, while only one of you can wear the headset at a time, you can still fool around with one of you in the environment and the other taking control . Let’s just say that I am both very married and my husband and I love experimenting in VR. We take turns with the headset in different environments (we both had fun in a game called “Elvin Love” for example, but we also have our individual favorites) and it can be a really unique and fun experience. One d…

This is where you learn to stand on your own. When I first started both my parents and my MIL both talked to my husband and I as if they didn’t believe that we could do this (financially or otherwise). Everyone assumed I was going back to work after my daughter turned 1. Daughter is now a teen, we’ve done great with planning. But while we never had direct confrontations like what you describe, what we got instead was a profound lack of faith and emotional support. A bit of a Cold War. My mother …

20 years into marriage and I agree with this 100%. If you want to lay the grounds for self improvement then you should marry a man who is also motivated towards self improvement.

I guess I am a good luck story. I had a career until I was 31. I had been with my spouse since we were 18, but we didn’t get married until 25. Then it was my career and him going back to school for something that pays well. Once we were ready to have kids, we also paired that with a cross country move that we had been wanting for a long time. Once we settled in our new place, he started work and I became a housewife and eventually SAHM. The learning curve was hard (how to get it all done) and I …

There is a lot of discussion on this in the Jungian psych realm. Google the term “puer aeternus”. They do tend to have been raised by overly dominant moms with either submissive or not present dads (of course exceptions to every rule). They can be very colorful, exciting, and adventurous while they are interested in you, but as soon as they decide that you are not their perfect woman (who doesn’t exist in reality), it’s like they slam a cold, steel door down between you and their emotions. And t…

Children still need adulthood modeling after age 8. How to be a functional adult, how to have relationships with other adults functional or not, personal or professional. Nurturing is good, and it’s important to always listen, but also keep in mind that they are always watching how you act. Once my daughter hit puberty I told her she was my apprentice. I’d teach her everything I knew, refer her to other sources or classes for the things I’m not good at, and generally do everything I could to mak…

This sounds weird, but spend some time just watching the little behaviors of the women you think have this in the bag. You are a naturalist and the next time or couples times you are in the bar, you care less about being in the bar and more about observing (sneakily) behaviors. How do they smile, how do they walk, mannerisms, vocal tones, posture. How close do they get when speaking to people? Do they look everyone in the eye and what kinds of emotions do you see in their eyes. Be happier, try t…

I agree with the poster who said that you could be a self-fulfilling prophesy. I used to put myself at zero on the charisma scale because I was pretty much invisible when walking into a room. Then I had a very pivotal 2 seconds when walking into a doctor’s office. I was lost in thought and a guy about 10 years older than me was leaving the office. He held the door open for me and without thinking (no time for my shyness to come through) I smiled and thanked him. He took a couple steps and then t…

Hang in there! You’re still so very young. I had about $30k of what I’d call “stupid, needless, agony debt” until my 30s. Now I just look at it as a transaction of youth... I bought some damn good life lessons that I really needed because I had no guidance growing up. Yes, they were costly, but my life got so much better after that point that I consider it a worthy transaction. I’m sure you will get there too. I’m sorry you had to go through a toxic jerk to get this far, but keep in mind that yo…

I certainly understand that. So one way of setting boundaries is to play dumb to his subtext. It’s not an issue unless he says or does something directly. Don’t read his mind and try to anticipate his feelings or behaviors. Don’t try to rationalize to him or make it easier on him because you know he disagrees. In other words, do what you intend and want to do. If he wants to make an issue of it then he has to do the work to make an issue of it and cause the ruckus. He has to take an active role …

My father is a narcissist and he would’ve been very happy to devour my entire life and have me take care of him till the end of his days. When he met my husband (we had been dating 3 years) he made up all kinds of crap to try and manipulate me into breaking up. He was nasty. Your father likely will never give his blessing because then by traditional and legal standards it officially makes him not the #1 man of your life (even though he shouldn’t be anymore anyway). It’s time for borders and boun…

I see far too many women shaming each other, period. Yes, lately it seems especially focused on being shamed for putting effort into facets of traditional femininity. However I see it in other areas too and it definitely seems to be competitive in some fashion, and is often snuck in as “playful banter”, with a laugh expected after the comment despite the fact that it was actually critical and belittling. I’ve seen it used against stay at home moms, for how people dress in the workplace, for not …

That looks great, I think I’ll get it for my library and keep it for when she’s ready. She’s got amazing priorities when it comes to boys, and has already told a few that she’s not considering anything more than friendship until she’s at least 15, and that she’s pretty “old school” about dating even then. But I think she’s going to need inspiration to help hold to her beliefs once she’s out in the adult world and look at the offerings of the dating pool.

Definitely appreciate my husband, but part of me is terrified for my 13 year old daughter. She’s a definite rpw in the making but I wonder who’s going to be out there by the time she’s ready for dating and eventual marriage.

I’m 45 and much of my focus is not only to be my best self in all aspects (I was a hot mess till my 30s anyway), but to keep in mind that I’m doing it especially for my health so that my husband and I can have an awesome retirement together. Additionally I have a teen daughter and she sees me fighting to be fit and feel great for the benefits it gives. And she likewise is striving to be her best (and she is a force to be reckoned with). The hilarious thing for me is that my self esteem was in th…

I’m sorry but that’s really not an acceptable response on his part. That’s your bed too and he had no right to demand you leave it for not “performing”. It’s disrespectful on his part at best. If I ever turn my husband down for sex and he really wants it, it’s no big deal. We usually just raincheck it for later. When he was younger he’d just go to the den and “hang out with himself” for a while and then come back to sleep beside me. Has he ever been annoyed that I didn’t want to play? Sure. Just…

Was your question even in good faith or are you looking for an echo chamber? You asked and then appeared upset at the answer. I don’t think you get it. And painting in such broad and simplistic strokes closes you off from finding meaning, truth, and solutions. Which is really how we’re going to get through the current crisis that has fractioned our our society along gender lines and horrifically damaged male and female relations. The problems of the world are not solved by making armies behind s…

I met my husband during freshman year of college and he was very much like this... the only difference is that he sorta had ambition / goals, but they were a pretty crazy starting point, akin to "I have to be a celebrity artist or it isn't worth me getting a job at all and I should go back and live with my parents". That was the more extreme side of it. But generally, when I asked him what he wanted for his future he would just talk about being an old man who was loved and well regarded by every…

I think the problem in this case is that he is not being entirely forthcoming about what kind of relationship he wants with you. If you say "hi" to a casual acquaintance at work, that's a relationship. It's a neutral term that doesn't denote potential or feeling or nuance. So him using it is kinda like talking to a lawyer socially. If he decides he'll eventually call on you for sex again (even if it's after a year's time), well, that is technically a relationship. He doesn't know you. You don't …

The “relationship “ he’s talking about could very well be something like “occasional booty call”. If he were really interested in you he’d at least want to get to know you before bringing up sex. Did you tell him you’re a virgin? Because it kinda sounds like he’s interested in your virginity.

He resents you for something. It may or may not be your fault. But he is behaving exactly the way my husband used to - and I behaved similar to you- earlier in our relationship before we worked some things out. So as a result he may feel like you have it so good that you have no excuse to be unhappy or to ask that he always be verbally complimentary. So your unhappiness makes him angry and pressured. In our case it was work, money, and life goal related. At first I was the breadwinner and he was…

When I met my husband we were both 18 and had come from problematic families that did nothing to help prepare us for adulthood. So neither of us was a good catch at first. However the thing that caught my attention - aside from his friendly and positive demeanor- was his openness, honesty, and forthrightness. I was the girl who was mocked in 7th grade because I put honesty as one of my top 3 important aspects of a future career (because apparently lying is “cool”), and I meet this guy who says o…

We were both 18 at college in the same huge dorm (with 800 other people). I had been on maybe 5 awkward dates my entire life, kissed 2 guys and that was it. Painfully shy and awkward, screwed up home life. I had seen him a couple times around the dorm and thought he was cute, energetic, and always smiling. But we never had reason to interact and I was pretty sure he didn’t notice me. Then one day on campus I had stayed late after class. I went to the very crowded bus stop to head home (it was di…

Can you invite her someplace to get the ball rolling? Like a spa day but it also includes hair and make up? So she sees it can be fun. I mention this because I was kinda that girl -not overweight, but afraid to set foot in a gym, and I had a mother who didn’t believe in cosmetics (as a teen I had to beg for even super cheap hair conditioner and I have curly hair). So what I really needed but was afraid to ask for, was help. Big time. I guessed my way through and did ok enough but really felt awk…

After 6 months of sleeping in our living room due to a very close call (someone shot at our house when daughter and I were sick and sleeping; bullet passed 2 inches above my head; fun with ptsd), we found our dream house. One month from offer to close, the whole process was a dream with the most amazing and helpful sellers. And now I’m literally setting up my dream home. It’s such a happy and quiet place. I’m having a blast with figuring out how everything needs to be, troubleshooting, and learn…

Don’t think of it as messing up. Otherwise he too is “messing up” and I don’t think applying that context you both actually helps anything. Some things work and some things don’t. We have good days and bad days. Some days we grow together and others we grow a little apart. The point is that adulting is hard, really damn hard. You are a human trying to make it work with another human who is struggling. The best thing you can do is always work on your own improvement and getting stronger (and hope…

Wow, that’s how you know you did the right thing. What a great result. It doesn’t mean all the problems stop, but you guys are building a great stable ground that will help him gain strength and coping and help you gain strength and the ability to focus on your own deal and not be dragged down when he’s sinking. -Been in the exact same scenario.

Working on this, there really is a learning curve. For me cleaning and clutter need to come first because that is an ongoing issue for us. But I also try to treat myself to fun expression in the home. Deciding to paint a room really makes a difference for me for example. And I found it to be fun and meditative when it was just me doing it. Something about really taking ownership. Also picking out art for the walls, even if it’s just something fun from Hobby Lobby. You start to get a vision of wh…
