It would but depending on how it's structured, it may not hit the highest tax bracket. At $158 million, he's at the absolute highest tax bracket. By buying apartments or car washes or laundromats, he'll pay a lump sum of money upfront for a trickle of income that'll hopefully offset this over the lifetime of the business.

Income is income. No, not all income is the same. Some income have a risk of not being income. If you work for a salary or wage, you're guaranteed of earning your salary. If you invest in stocks that pay out a percentage of its value as a dividend per year, if the stock tanks, there's a chance your dividend will be severely decreased or nothing (depending on how the payments are structured). In the US, the reason for lower tax rates is this risk.

If the IRS takes the taxes out of the $338 million before he has access to it, it prevents him from investing the full amount into businesses. He could literally spend the entire $338 million on a string a apartments or existing businesses that would generate him cash every year. And he wouldn't be in the 55% tax bracket because he'd have $338 million of tax write offs.

As I recall, Google tailors your search results based on previous searches. So I'm guessing whoever were performing these searches probably searched for similar things in the past. After clearing my cookies, I didn't get the same results.
