I’d be feeling doubtful in your place too, and you don’t deserve to feel that way, as you’ve said clearly that you want to get married. He also doesn’t seem very driven and that can be unattractive. Have you talked about what the long term would look like for your relationship? Eg. Will you combine finances? Will you pay off debts together? You’ve said you don’t expect him to provide for you…does that mean everything will be 50-50? Is there a timeframe for when you’d get married? What about kids…

You need to establish iron boundaries if you don’t want to go back to your ex. Stop all communication, delete his contact and don’t try to “stay friends”. Don’t leave a channel of communication open. As for the loneliness, I’d suggest working on your hobbies and joining some local groups for them. Volunteering is also a great way to keep yourself occupied and have some social connection. If you find that these activities don’t have people closer to your age, you could look for online groups on m…

My mom was very strict about that, so even when I was very young, she’d make me take some candy or some other snack to share. I restricted myself to only bringing stuff for meals/events/stays over the last few years because I got made fun of but when you put it that away, your friend does seem so nice, and I’m glad you don’t feel negatively towards her

Thank you for your response. We’re of a similar age range here, maybe a bit younger, but I still thought I’d be on the same page with people. I feel like I’m on crazy pills when I see other people not caring at all and it especially feels exhausting when it’s my SO

That’s a fair perspective. I usually bring homemade baked goods or wine or chocolate or some flowers. I understand being frustrated by unfinished food but that’s when they can offer for guests to take some with them. I’ve attended some events where the host was happy to have leftovers because they could take a couple days off cooking. Asking for the remainder of the bottle of wine (or whatever else) you brought feels tacky to me but I’ve seen other people do it. Which is why I wondered if it’s t…

I needed to hear that from somebody else other than my own head. Thank you for responding

What I’ve observed is that while he may not be a naturally giving person without being prompted, he definitely likes to be perceived as one. We do a lot of joint gifts and I handle those because he feels too pressured (not financially, but in terms of deciding what to get) and there’ve been times when the other person mistook it as a gift only from him and he rolled with it without mentioning me. You might be right on family influence there - I’ve found his family to be lovely but they do dote o…

I think it’s obliviousness more than selfishness but I do have rose-tinted glasses on cause I love him. What’s weird is that his ability to cook (often for us) and clean up played a huge role in earning my respect because my previous partner was awful in that regard. He only became “complacent” around 1.5 years ago when we moved in together and I got worried about him thinking it was due to stress and changing jobs. I’m still giving him the benefit of doubt because I have hope that it wasn’t all…

He is often oblivious, that’s true. What I’ve been trying to teach myself is that I can’t change him and I shouldn’t attempt to so I work on myself, but I do get caught in the trap of thinking that he should’ve learned by now or atleast show me that he is attempting to grow and work on himself as well. Thanks for your reply

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
