My father is an ex-marine and jokingly (I think) threatened to break my arms so I couldn't sign the papers to join the military at 18. I had no interest at the time anyway, but looking back it would have done wonders. I have no discipline and no motivation, and the military would have resolved at least half of those problems. Nice, yea travelling is fantastic. Backpacking europe was the best thing I'd ever spent money on. Shame no one wants to pay me to do that forever. Talking to girls is getting easier as I get older. Fun fact: There is strong evidence Neanderthals were actually smarter than us. They had bigger brains (~30% larger) and better tools than us. Anyway, I agree with your metaphor. Well, you've reinforced a hard truth I'd been trying to avoid for a long time- that the best thing for me to do is go out on my own and become my own person. To create myself from the foundation up- something I can be proud of. I'm not sure to what level it's feasible in today's market, but where there's a will (and a basic understanding of finances) there's a way, right? Great post Mike. A quote that has stuck with me related to this topic is "Labels, even positive ones, are inherently self-limiting". This sort of goes against what was said about saying "I run, I win, etc.", but I have found it to be true. People that live by labels miss out on opportunities that 'aren't things I do'.
