There are a lot of different thinkers and minds who have tried to answer this question. For example I read for class today that Aristotle thought of happiness as more than just a mental state but also part mindset part action. To achieve this happiness he believed living according to different virtues was best. Its called Virtue ethics/Virtue Theory. Just one opinion tho.
