Where I live, two people making $40-60k can lead a good (middle/upper-middle class) lifestyle. If they plan on (1) bring children into that equation AND (2) eliminate one income if the wife stays home, that means the guy should be making $80-100k. If you're feeling uneasy from it that gives the impression you are easily scared off which is not a trait a guy wants in his partner. I'm sorry but I don't agree. I see it more like women who play the "you can go out with the boys tonight if you want" …

I get it and I know the economy is in a downward spiral. I have many friends who have been let go and/or are looking for work right now. And his situation was unavoidable (they basically dissolved his position) so I don't blame him for it. Like I mentioned previously, it's part "he's living in fantasy" and part "he's exaggerated his situation." He says he wants his wife to stay at home and raise the kids (which is my ideal situation too). OK, how does he plan to support that? Because let's be re…

Right? He does other things like that too. If I point out a celebrity or character I find attractive, he gets really sullen. And it's not the playful sarcastic kind of sullen, it really upsets him. On one hand, I feel bad like I shouldn't say those things in front of him. But on the other, it's not like I'm running off with Liam Hemsworth anytime soon!

you seem to know what you want, and this man isn't it, even if he has good points. That's what makes it difficult. You know how people make concessions when it comes to other things, like jobs? This job is far away but pays better, this one doesn't pay great but it'll look good on my resume. I'm trying to figure out if the good outweighs the bad here. And I agree, it feels like a guilt trip. He doesn't do it consciously but I think it's a manifestation of his low self esteem, like he thinks he i…

I responded to another comment that honesty plays into it too, that I felt like he exaggerated his situation. I've seen that post, and I agree with it. I think my problem has been going for guys who meet only some of the "needs" instead of holding out for someone who hits all of them. Thank you for the reminder!

It's not that I'm against someone making less than me. If I know from the start a guy makes less than me, it does play into my decision but it's not a dealbreaker. The problem is I don't think he was honest with me in the beginning. He would talk up that he works a well-paying job and plans on buying a house in the next year or two (which around here a house in a decent neighborhood runs about $350-400k). When someone says that, you assume that person is making $80k+ a year and has some savings.…

Never. stop. vetting. Till you got a rock on your hand. Thank you, I feel like I need to get this tattooed on my arm to remind me! I have to stop getting comfortable and complacent once that status change occurs. This has been something I've struggled with in dating for a while now: I'm way too trusting. When a guy says on the first date he's got a great job, I believe it. When a few weeks' in I find out he makes less than me, I believe when he says he'll be getting a raise soon. When the salari…

That's what I keep thinking. If these thoughts are coming up at 3 months, it probably won't get any better. Where do you draw the line between "making it work" and "next"? I'm an independent woman (don't know if that's considered a bad thing around here), and my first instinct when things go bad is to drop it. But then I wonder if I'm too comfortable on my own and give up on relationships too easily. I feel bad and so I go in the opposite direction: try my hardest to make things work, way beyond…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
