If comedy is actually a place for free speech, then comedians should be at least given the benefit of the doubt because their job is to make people laugh, not spread hate. Not only was he in a situation where other people were writing jokes for him, what he was doing was beyond stand up, and had a cultural impact. Like, when I was a kid, we threw around the word “fag” before we even knew what it meant. We matured, learned that kind of language was hurting people, and stopped. You could test some controversial material and see how people responded to it. You had the privacy to swing and miss, and then make the decision to either tweak the joke to get the response you hoped for, or just throw it away.
