I think it is mostly a problem with young people, male and female. We take ourselves too seriously when we're young and think magnificent intellect is all we need. As you get older you develop a bit of self awareness and ideally some social skills and a desire to take care of ourselves better. I did anyway.

I just don't think OP has given us enough info to draw any logical conclusions. For all we know her boyfriend could be a raging douche.
