High end sunglasses are a great example. The cheaper models are usually the more popular but is it because they’re cheaper or are they cheaper because they sell more of them? It just appears as though both items are on clearance (or neither is) based on them being in the same location and having price labels that are exactly the same so saying one is on clearance and that’s why it’s cheaper doesn’t really explain this. More often, items with low demand are considered “specialty” and priced higher than the more common counterparts. Especially since this post is specifically about tools. Typically, when you sell less of something you mark up the price so you make more profit on each sell vs items that sell often can have a lower markup and you make your money by the volume you sell. The only time they discount something to “get it out the door” is if they decide to stop carrying it and put it on clearance.
