In most of the unhappy marriages I've seen in my life, they stay together, but for different reasons. The men usually stay because they are afraid of being alone, the women usually stay because they can't support themselves financially. As women become more financially independent, especially college educated, they are no longer bound by that and are free to leave unhappy marriages, so I would expect to see women filing more frequently than in the past.
