It's two pronged. In most of the unhappy marriages I've seen in my life, they stay together, but for different reasons. The men usually stay because they are afraid of being alone, the women usually stay because they can't support themselves financially. It's generally true that a woman's wealth and status are much smaller factors of attractiveness of a woman, especially at younger ages. However, for marriage, most people are looking for the same levels of wealth/status/education.
