This. I've lived all over the world, which obviously makes fostering friendships quite difficult. Having said that, I have 2-3 close friends I'll try to reach out to at least once a month and meet up in person once a year. Because last year was a terrible year for most, I had a fallout with one of my close friends, and I used to just vent to my NVX how I can't believe such a strong friendship could end so quickly. He listened quietly and said nothing, mostly. Fast forward a few months, NVX and I…

This actually just reminded me why my running schedule and routes change on a weekly basis. I have been doing it for so long, I forgot it was because I've been taught by other women to never make daily habits to go outside at the same time.

Oh I 100% have been in his position where I’ve driven friends home out of safety more than anything. The moment I made the realization that this should be normal considerate behavior, I was laughing at myself for being shocked by his behavior.

I absolutely love Science Fiction, but I remember reading Dune and just the way Herbert worded sone phrases to describe the bene gesserits, and the related excerpts of the muad’dib made me put the book down halfway. Maybe I’ve misinterpreted his style, but it just didn’t click and it totally felt like a “men-writing-women” moment in some passages. Conversely, Bayta Darrell from Asimov’s Foundation trilogy is still my role model in terms of strong female characters. Also, not sci fi, but I just f…

I just overstayed at a friend’s place last week long enough that the metro wasn’t running anymore and getting home was near impossible. Without even batting an eye, he booked a shared car nearby his place and drove me the 30-minute drive home, at 2am, on a weekday. And then proceeded to drop me off and drive himself the 30 minutes back. I felt terrible and kept thinking how weird it looks not having a car and having had this guy go above and beyond, just for me. When I told my sister my concern …

I don’t know about you, but inter-species allegories always leave me wanting to hear more. “Totally get the post-nut clarity in male human species, it would kinda suck if you had that instinct going on for you, but on top of it you were a male mantis with literally only one shot to nut right…”

Sweet Mary you’ve just triggered so many memories!!! I have a very international name that becomes highly denominational based on pronunciation. Some men I’ve dated have been considerate enough to ask me how I pronounce it. Others—and I hate to admit it but even boyfriends—have been too lazy to ask, so they just settled to calling me Babe or Darling. Nah, dude; say my name.

Months after my most recent breakup, NVX sends me this long ass email explaining how he just couldn’t believe “the woman I loved and thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with has left me.” Ummm, no sir: There was no ring on my finger but plenty of bruises on my arms. I definitely see how fora like FDS can serve as a vessel for women to speak up while still maintaining a veil of anonymity/guarantee protection. The point you raised made me just think of an observation I made while living in Rome: the aggressiveness of women drivers. Rome is a mess by foot, so don't even get me started of the chaos that driving brings forth. It's beyond the seventh circle of hell: it's stressful, it's aggressive, it consumed everyone who is behind the wheel, across the board. W…

I love my husband. He’s well read, adventurous and does a hysterical rendition of a northern Vermont accent that still cracks me up after 12 years of marriage. But he also tends to be forgetful, and is often tardy and mercurial. He hovers around me in the kitchen asking if I read this or that piece in The New Yorker when I’m trying to concentrate on the simmering pans. He leaves wadded tissues in his wake. He suffers from serious bouts of spousal deafness but never fails to hear me when I mutter…

NYTimes articles What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy MarriageIn this popular essay from June 2006 — one of the most emailed New York Times articles ever — a wife tries to improve her husband by using exotic-animal training techniques. By Amy SutherlandPublished Oct. 11, 2019 As I wash dishes at the kitchen sink, my husband paces behind me, irritated. “Have you seen my keys?” he snarls, then huffs out a loud sigh and stomps from the room with our dog, Dixie, at his heels, anxious over her favorite…

This! a thousand times!!! I've been painfully shy my whole youth, to the point that I was once so intimidated by my high school boyfriend's parents that his mom thought I had a speech impediment. It's definitely been hindering at times, even outside the romance sphere. I've been told multiple times by male acquaintances that I am attractive but definitely intimidating, because my shyness often comes off as standoffish (in hindsight, this is a blessing in disguise because it keeps the creeps away…

Now at least you're no longer going to be cheating yourself out of what you truly deserve. I hope you get to make it a bit your home, even if until November, and just bask in that space big enough to love yourself in. Also, big ups to pops! I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must have been to see his daughter and being unable to protect you the way he has sworn to do.

Had a similar revelation lately. Was reconnecting with friends and reached out to this guy who I had considered a friend, even through the 10 years we were geographically distant. I think he had a crush on me at some point in high school but whatever. So we meet up and chat and it’s great. I finally meet his gf in person and it’s all dandy. We hang out him and me again some time later and again cool conversation until he asks why I reached out to him and who else had I reached out to from our ol…

This resonates a lot because I have also started being more cognizant of relationship dynamics with other people in my life and I have noticed this sense of insecurity of being judged or abandoned by the people I care the most gnawing at me. But now I call myself put and realize people around me love me for who I am and if I ever disappoint them for some ill behavior, then it’s likely I’ve disappointed myself too. But I am confident in myself and honestly love many aspects of me and how my mind …

I cycled downtown yesterday to meet up with a friend and ended up getting to the café half an hour early. So I sat down with a cold beer, basking in that perfect summer afternoon light, in complete silence and peacefully observing my surroundings. No pretenses, no tensions, just this beautiful chunk of time to just be with myself. And I chuckled to myself because that simple moment made me so happy!

I side with you on this one. I still keep in touch with one of my exes and his family because we pretty much grew up together and then for reasons beyond our control grew apart. I 100% think he is part of the reason I am who I am today, and am genuinely always happy to hear he’s doing well. But yes, definitely an exception.

I believe if there are enough FDS-minded out there, the system could work. It's a question of stakeholder engagement in the end, not a question of feasibility. I think a better society can be attainable, it's a matter of how much each of us is willing to have a productive role in it. You could make the same argument about everything: why even try to tackle climate change if we already think such an achievement is unattainable to restore Earth enough to maintain it liveable? Well, because it woul…

Excellent idea! Reading this helped me get an idea of what exactly to look for in a man. The Education aspect especially-- I've often dated men with no university education, because back in my pickmeisha days I would try to justify their scarcity by highlighting their other qualities, but I've come to realize how much a formal and specialized education can help develop someone's critical thinking and other very helpful values to have in life. I feel somewhat guilty about setting this standard, I…

I wish I were as bright as you at 18. You already seem much more aware than I ever was, and I am confident that you'll be able to distinguish shite from gold in a partner in no time. Your ex was just a trial and error on what to avoid in a partner. It can only get better for you, if you remember not to settle for anything less than the equivalent of your greatness.

I just broke up with my Danish boyfriend because it was shocking how alcohol consumption at any time of the day was normalized and how the majority of social contexts involve alcohol. Also, his definition of love is my definition of neglect and the relationship dragged to a point where I felt starved of love and basic respect. Of course this is just my observation. But I'd often hear his male friends talk about their partners as being just the mother of their children, and not necessarily feel a…

At this point liberal feminism is just in cahoots with abusive rapist men. It strips women of all common sense, reason and self protection and then shoves them out into the world where they get raped. right???? Like, would you think to walk into a zoo and enter the gorilla's pen? Would you walk with a wad of cash in hand through a bad neighborhood? Would you think it safe to drink a beer in public in Oman? Don't focus on the sunken costs of the failed relationship, you're doing you and that's going to get you so much further ahead than if you had stayed with him. I'm going through a breakup myself at the moment, and although some days are harder than others, I can feel my self healing every day. I can't even begin to appreciate how much FDS has helped me figure out complicated dynamics in the most simple and effective way. I was raised in Southern Europe and my most recent ex is Scandinavian and holy crap did he just murder romance. At first I thought I had just been spoiled by my Italian exes, but then realized the considerable difference in what romanticism and generally the whole dating universe is north vs south. I feel like dating is more of a practical thing in the nordic countries, like an attempt to stave off loneliness.

I don't even know how it degenerated so quickly. I know that just reading through FDS has been so beneficial to me and if there was one thing that screams "TRUTH" from reading through the posts is that often times LVM are so great at strategically hiding behind a very few HVM traits until they realize they can quit the act because they've got us right where they want us. It's just been a series of absurd fights with my boyfriend for the past month. Each time, it was a hassle to reconcile and try to make things bearable between us, until I can figure out how to finally leave. And then yesterday, I just snapped. We went out for dinner, and are having a relatively pleasant evening. For me it was the first time out to dinner in public, because of the strict lockdown restrictions in place since December 2020, and the place was really crowded, which left me a bit unea…

On a semi-related note, regarding the "WE" vs "I" component in couples' conversation, this thought popped into my head: it seems like it's a common trait of some types of men to take credit of successes with an "I" vs being able to identify themselves as a component of the unit who made the success possible, with a "WE". I don't know if I'm reading too much into this guy's reaction and generalizing, but I've been more observant of this me vs. us dynamic men bring up.

Wholly agree with everything you mentioned. I think just mutual respect and safety should be at the basis of a strong foundation of a relationship. I've been in abusive relationship in the past, which is why I's always anxious to maintain a safe and environment in any relationship -- not because I feel like I deserve it, or that it should be a given in any healthy relationship but because I believe that if I don't procure that environment, it simply will not exist. LVM have used my trauma to man…
