Oh, here we go! I'm "afraid" and let me guess why? Jesus, this is like trying to argue with old school psychologists. The OP was correct (I feel) about a fear of out-group members of our species being something we're evolved to worry about. I understand that he's trying to call racism and xenophobia labels we're putting on normal human reactions to strangers. The circular reasoning he's employing beyond these points is silly and easily proven false once you step outside of his circular reasoning…

You are using the OPs circular logic - which is specifically what I am criticizing. There is no way out of his line of argument because if you deny its truth "you're afraid, bro" and if you agree, well, you agree. Freud did the same thing. Deny you're a perverted asshole = "you're repressed, bro". Act like a perverted asshole = "see, told you so." His points about witch hunts and career destruction for expressing antipathy towards strangers ... okay, cool, that resonated with me. I can see somet…

So we're racist and xenophobic deep down inside but it's fear of reprisal that keeps it all under wraps? Sounds like a new twist on Freud. Act racist and xenophobic? See! We knew it all along! Don't act racist and xenophobic? You're being suppressed by modernity bro! The author is confirming the bat-shit insanity that social justice warriors insist upon: that all men are racist, xenophobic, violent, monsters. He's just adding a twist that we all suppress it because we're afraid of being outcast …

Here are few examples that immediately came to mind: Chinese Exclusion Act of 1888 until 1943; Racially Restrictive Covenants until 1948 Shelley vs. Kraemer ruling by Supreme Court; and, California Alien Land Law of 1913 until 1952. There is ample documentation of not just these laws and their impact but of boat loads of other horrific abuses of non-whites in California. It is trivial to find these stories, and in a sense it isn't noteworthy at all - since this type of racism took place across t…

This is getting really off-topic, but California has been over-run with immigrants from within the U.S. and beyond since the 1890's and is only now a little over half-full with people born in this state. This is a nitpicking point I feel compelled to bring up: "as men we are logical creatures" --> I understand why you feel that way, but you've not spent enough time working with and amongst people (I think) to make such a statement. Men, and women, are NOT logical creatures. We are usually "not logical" in different ways, but to pretend that people are logical is stupid. Try and move people to action in any domain (work, war, politics, sport, parties, etc.) and you will soon find that we are not …

[Totally off topic with this] Harvard used to accept people this way - but too many Jews were getting in and spoiling the WASP club. Subjective entrance requirements were instated to keep minorities out of the Ivy League. Affirmative Action is subjective requirements to do the opposite. Crazy world, isn't it?

That is something that I studied as an undergraduate evolutionary anthropologist. You bring up salient points - few I would refute, in fact I agree with a lot you have said. Your points, however, do little to weaken the statement I made initially. The demand/request for sex does not take place in a vacuum. We have some evolved dispositions that complicate matters considerably. Again, I am not trying to hold one party blameless or totally guilty in all interactions.

I am not trying to describe the current situation between men and women, but to talk about the issue as it is reflected in our psychology. In an ancestral setting (a small band of humans living as hunter gatherers) rejecting advances from a member of your group can be a dangerous thing to do. I think human psychology in this setting skews towards a set of behvaiors that can, sometimes, make women feel "forced" into acting (the same thing could be said for men rejecting advances of sexual pairing…

There is an implied risk of physical violence and/or risk of being ostracized for a woman refusing her boyfriend/husband/mate sex on demand. This is not universally true, but true enough times to count when talking about these matters.

I don't like lifting weights. Standing or sitting around and doing purposeless physical work just to change the way my body looks is not fun and doesn't engage the rest of who I am as a human. I prefer to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H0D8VaIli0 Singing, dancing, companionship, massive amounts of physical and mental exertion and when I am done I feel like a better version of myself in a community of better people.

I really don't think you can blame feminism for the social isolation many Americans are born into, and spend their lives dealing with. This country has been in the middle of a huge experiment in living patterns with detached single family homes and an automobile based lifestyle.

The bodies of the men in 300 are the result of near-constant amounts of incredibly hard physical exercise and an intentional lack of certain types of foods. That is not something attainable by the average person as clearly the average person is stuck in a negative feedback loop of driving everywhere, feeling like shit, eating like shit, getting weaker, and so needing to drive more. What I am saying is that the guys in 300 are worked to the point of collapse (and beyond - please go watch some int…

The guys in 300 are being paid to work out for 4+ hours a day. That is some serious shit to dangle in front of little boys thinking about what type of badass they want to be when they grow up - and many of them will never measure up to that insanely high standard. Negative things are inevitably following as the male physique becomes just as commoditized as womens bodies have been.

No, I think that Truman's ridiculous international politics are what a lot of Americans use to define what "manly" means - hence acts of war like dropping nukes on Japan are seen as bold and important, for example. Like I said in my post, it is tangential politicizing. I do not think that a militarized international politics should be associated with "manliness" since it is men, in general, who directly pay the consequences with their lives, resources, and body parts - that isn't manly, that is …

Hey man, dancing will get you laid - a quick survey of human culture can confirm this. The people mocking you have never been the only straight male in a college dance class. As to whether of not it is "masculine" is ridiculous - it can be and it can NOT be. I mean, is painting masculine? Depends on the work, man.

Tangential politicizing: I think it is a shame that dropping a bomb on Japan and the Truman-era stupidity that the U.S. engaged in is seen as being "a man" by a lot of Americans. Truman was the least popular president of the 20th century (until GW Bush).

Not to take the side of the horde of rude people in this argument but the Catholic church has done some pretty heinous stuff and had the police look the other way as well. Taken against the background of ~5,300 generations since modern Homo Sapiens established themselves, I don't think 60 to 400 generations is a big enough time period to use as a basis for establishing that a civilization-centric view of pair bonding is what is "natural". Quasi-permanent union, I think, is the perfect term. With that said, are people on /r/TRP really looking for a permanent or quasi-permanent union or are they simply trying to discover a means to game the mechanics of pair bonding…

While useful I find this analysis of human affairs to be incredibly civilization-centric in the leap it takes from evolutionary time to instances where marriage is viewed as an unbreakable bond between two parties/families. Hunter gatherers and horticulturalists do not cultivate lifetime unions between the sexes, and this is most likely the scenario that humans have evolved in. The brief window of time between the invention of agriculture and organized religion and the present day is not a deep …

It is important to note the age, income, etc. of subjects in a study like this as the title of your post is not "Surveyed female college students" it is "Women". Women are a diverse bunch and I would assume that an adolescent woman, a woman in her mid-20's, 30's, 40's or poor and uneducated or rich and educated or some mix of different factors (like membership of a high or a low status ethnic group) would make a significant difference in her mating choices/strategy. Your definition of the black or grey market is not an accepted definition - prostitution, extortion, money laundering, identity theft, fraud and other activities are longstanding parts of the criminal economy.. I think you are mistaken as in my personal experience women are subject to some intense levels of "do this to be normal" cultural policing as well as "do what I want you to do or you are a bad person" levels of social interaction. It seems to the me that women are usually on very shaky ground, even more so when they don't have a group of friends or family to help them figure out whether or not they are okay in the eyes of people who matter.

If you have ever been the brunt of a violent attack, unable to mount an effective defense, and been unable to escape you'd know the psychic wounds can be quite deep. Often the physical wounds from an attack are the gift that keep on giving. The person who inflicted them is fine, but you are nursing yours, dealing with antibiotics, hospitals, medicine, etc.

Once your reality has been altered by a swift and unexpected blow to the face by someone you care for deeply, it is hard to puzzle out what your best interests are at that moment.
