In South Africa, the amount of women killed by their partners and men killed by their partners is almost equal. About 53.5% of IPV murder victims are women. When it comes to all murder, men are usually 83 or 84% of the victims. But our government has just declared violence against women to be a national disaster. We have 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence (they mean violence against women) and we hear all the time about the 'war against women'. Nobody cares about male victims.

Funnily enough when I was discussing this with GPT it gave me stats showing 83% of murders were men, and that intimate partner murders are almost equal, but still kept insisting that women are disproportionately affected. It tried a few times to gaslight me, but when I kept calling it out it eventually begrudgingly agreed that it would be wrong to say that based on the facts.

No. The murder figures are from the SAPS annual report (actually from ChatGPT, I didn't look through the report to find them, although I've seen other figures from a few years ago which was about 18,000 murders, 84% of which were men, so I believe these figures to be correct). I can't be sure, but I think its a mixed bag. Some of us would identify as feminist, others as anti-feminist. I am an egalitarian and would hope most here are as well. I don't call myself a feminist or an anti-feminist. Just egalitarian. And left wing. (In the old fashioned socialist sense).

I stand corrected. Thanks. Maybe its just an age thing. I see left and right wing as something purely to do with economics and class as it always has been. Left = socialist, right = capitalist. To me liberal means economic liberalism / free market / right wing. To me both of the main parties in the US are on the right and the differences are cosmetic.

I think a lot of confusion comes from the terms having changed their meaning over time. Left wing used to mean believing in public ownership of the means of production and distribution (factories, etc) as well as believing in public healthcare and other services. Right wing used to mean believing in private ownership of all of the above. It used to be purely economic. But then things changes and now the terms are related to a whole lot of other things that have nothing to do with economics.

I think the best thing to do is calmly and rationally call them out and tell them you consider what they said to be misandry. Without getting ugly. It doesn't hurt men in the same ways. It hurts men in different ways. There are many things that disproportionately affect women. There are other things that disproportionately affect men.
