This stuff happens at work because there two type of people at the the office - talkers and producers. The talkers are the social engineers who don't really get much done but have excellent people skills and prove their value that way. 1	Lifting is not enough. Don't BETA PROVIDE for your BOSS. Yeah I had to sign a non-compete clause to work on that project, so I could get burned really bad if I went that route. Besides, I've put it all behind me. For the first few months after I left, my managers emailed me a few times trying (begging) to bring me on as a contractor - but I politely declined every time. In my situation, only one of my managers was a woman (and she was the one who felt bad and told me I was being taken advantage of, albeit after several drinks on a Friday evening). 19	Lifting is not enough. Don't BETA PROVIDE for your BOSS. Yup, I was doing the contracting thing for awhile and it was fun. The money wasn't too bad either :) One of my clients offered a contract to hire thing though, with excellent pay, basic benefits, work remotely from a place of my choosing and only a 25-30 hr work week. I was lead software engineer; we had won a $300,000 extension contract on my main project and I never got a raise or anything, heck, I even asked for one! 10 months later I found out that the reason we got that contract was specifically because of my role in the project, that the people contracting us didn't want to lose me and my knowledge of the software.
