A lot of big tech and pharma companies have these programs and they're pretty competitive. This is the easy button if you can get in. The most common place to start is in inside sales for large companies. CDW and Dell are known to hire young and hungry kids to pound the phones. Consumer sales generally much lower margin, higher volume. This is Apple corp selling an iPad to Joe Blow. Sales people in this line of work generally don't make a ton. Its not exclusive to my current company; I've worked for two Fortune 500 tech manufacturers over the last 8 years and it was the same policy. Face to face meetings are highly valued, but a lot of time Webex meetings are just as effective.
