Correct, but a little child only understands that doing something bad results in harm. It may be slightly more effective when they are older, but a little child will only think that they will get hurt for doing something wrong. It's not effective in the long term.
Physical harm should not be motivation to a child to not do something bad. Punishment can come in many forms, such as restrictions or prohibiting the use of games systems, mobile devices, etc. No need to hit.
