I don't think I implied anything like that.

The specific news is that Brazil recognized that GAY COUPLES have a right to maternity leave, not that MEN have a right to maternity leave. I believe this is a positive. However, saying "Man gets maternity leave in Brazil" would be to mistate what is actually happening. Brazil is not recognizing a male's rights to maternity leave in general, only in the specific case of a gay couple.

This story is not just of interest to MR, it is ALSO of interest to the gay community. When a national government recognizes gay couples as they do heterosexual couples, that's big news. So yes, it IS important that they're gay. EDIT: The point is that Brazil has NOT recognized a man's right to maternity leave, but rather a GAY COUPLE's right to maternity leave. Saying "Man gets maternity leave in Brazil" implies that Brazil is supporting the right of ANY man with a child to take maternity leave…

Interesting. If she hadn't stabbed him, I bet no-one outside MR would even take him seriously.

We are not turning a blind eye at all. We are in fact prosecuting her. Right now it seems like she will go to jail. However, that doesn't mean we should retract our condemnations of homophobia. I agree she should not be held up as ANY type of misunderstood hero. But I also think she brought attention to an important issue, and we shouldn't use her insanity as an excuse to resuming ignoring gay rights.

This is happened in my hometown, Lincoln NE. It's normally a conservative community. When this happened the whole city, both sides of the political spectrum, came together to decry anti-gay violence. Now everyone feels a bit betrayed. To their credit, the local GLBT organizations have thanked the police for their thorough investigation. Overall, this editorial cartoon sums up my feelings on the issue. But it is so awful she did this to EVERYONE.

In this context, this article on the judge becomes much funnier.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
