I also forgot to mention that shorting more shares than exist is only possible through illegal and highly unethical "naked shorting" which is shorting stocks that you never actually borrowed. Apparently this goes on quite often in the hedge funds and the SEC has never done anything about it, and it's only now that they are being punished for it.
