I don't think your two claims are contradictory. Violence was higher in non-monogamous societies because a significant portion of men didn't get to mate (which tends to make men angry). This also hurt productivity. Monogamy optimized for both the aggression and productivity issues. I don't think anyone is saying men were sitting around waiting for women to fix us.

When you break down his message to basics, what he is telling people is to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of society. This is Marxist ideology. The guy rails against marxism more than just about anyone since the Red Scare. His idea of sacrifice is actually more like what we talk about when we say "killing off your old blue pill conditioning". Killing off what is not working/not helpful and coming back better. Not blaming groups, oppression, circumstances, etc, like Marxism does.

I met Elliot briefly at a free RSD summit. Shortly after they did a frame building exercise you see in their videos of 50 guys getting around one person and insult/push them around. Suddenly I heard one of the circles chanting a name and I looked over and saw Elliot in the middle and had flipped the whole crowd to his side. Dude has monster frame.

Starting Strength is popular because it's simple and Rip's folksy and entertaining descriptions. It is a bit culty, though. I see a lot of complaints about injuries or going t-rex mode from the program but the guys are so hooked in they'll keep banging their head against the wall until they need surgery instead of swapping out an exercise. Any program will work for beginners.
