The Bhagavad Gita describes this best. Essentially, when you reach a point of self peace, you will no longer desire the objects that held you back. What was holding him back was his desires to accomplish his goals, he know who he is now, he has accomplished what he set forth and he doesn't feel held back by it. In fact, all along it seems he was taking the long road to real confidence. Which it looks like he accomplished.
