Worse than I could've imagined. Relationship has been dead for years. She's suggested that I leave multiple times over the past few months and that she was "moving towards separation". Those empty threats, the contempt and disrespect, my mounting resentment, it all just got to be too much. The toxicity was affecting the kids. Marriage counseling was doing less than nothing. I told her I wanted to leave and go back to my hometown where my support system is. I guess she thought "separation" meant …

Social Worker. Somehow has a complete blind spot for her own husband. Can't see how someone so caring towards others can be a narcissist in relationships. But here we are.

Yeah I've been married 17 1/2 years, 3 kids, and we just bought a house. I'm preparing to file. It's scary but necessary. Like you, no infidelity. A little bit of physical violence on her part (she has punched me twice in our relationship), and she would call my irritability and yelling violence so take that how you want to. But the main thing is it's a loveless marriage and her contempt and my resentment have made things untenable. It's created a toxic environment for the kids and it just doesn…

My dad used to say "she ain't my mama". Used to piss me off, especially because he spent most of my childhood trying to get back with her. I may be on my way out the door, but I will always respect my STBXW as the mother of my kids. She made me a father, and she may be a bad wife but she is a good mom. Most of the time.

Thank you! It has been hard but long overdue. My therapist was like "FINALLY!", but all my family keeps telling me I should try to "work it out". Feels like very few understand, which makes it even harder. But after 17 years of marriage I have nothing left so I don't even see it as bravery so much as just necessity.

Absolutely not. I thought loving someone meant giving 100% of yourself and they'd give 100% of themselves in return. Turns out, my 100% was sustaining things and she was giving 0%. As I got more and more depleted, the relationship got worse and worse. Until I finally realized that I married a narcissist and the love I felt in the beginning was my own love. She never loved me and only married me because of what I did for her. Dependable and loyal like a puppy. Once I found some self-respect it al…

Not yet. Honestly, I kinda assumed they would favor the servicemember. But I'm open to everything so it probably is a good idea to look into

Did future me write this? Realizing this person who you thought was an angel is actually a malignant narcissist is devastating. My partner is revealing that to me now.

Oh my god, then have the nerve to accuse you of "playing the victim"! "I guess I'm just a bad wife. I can't make you happy." 🙄 Of course you can. You just don't want to try because dealing with your shit is too hard. But I guess she's right about being a bad wife. She's just wrong that she can't change it.

Damn. Harsh truths that we all know but it's easier said than done. It's not just that we're in denial that things can get better. It's not even just the sunken cost fallacy. Divorce can be just as hard and miserable as this existence. Sometimes even worse. And despite them not showing up for us in the relationship, we still show up for them because of our own integrity. And because we still love them. Recognizing that things won't get better doesn't negate that the alternative is often just as …

Wife just told me I should consider moving back to my hometown since I'm so unhappy with her and there's "nothing else" she can do for me. I'm an at-home dad/military spouse and have literally everything to lose if I go anywhere. Gave up my career to support hers. But we rent and the kids are older, so I'm strongly considering it. I hate it here.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
