Finland has 900 thousand reservists the same amount as Russia has active military personel. Most of these wouldn't fight. Finland has war time strenght of 280 thousand soldiers. Russias war time strenght is massive but Russia is so big country it can't use it's whole army just a portion of it. Usually it's accepted that Russia can Give 10% of it's military to attack Finland. The thing is that it's basically a political statement. It means were ready to defend ourselfs. For all of our history we have been subjects of other nations and we need a good army and we must show that were ready to fight. If the conscription is stopped sooner or later we will drift into Russias sphere and we will become the next Ukraine. We don't technically need it but it's better to be safe than a Russian puppet state.

Simple answer is that it's tradition but then there is reasons why not to break this tradition. The reaaon is that the army is overflowing with soldiers (we can't equip half of the million reservist), the training is expensive and women are usually not as good soldiers as men.

That would be stupid. Most women can't pass the physical training and the army is overloaded with soldiers. We can't even equip half of our reserve. Women should get a training for Lotta activities and It is generally accepted that women without families would be made into a modern Lotta unit. Basically if the goverment would make the forced conscription for women the whole country would be in a open rebellion (including the army) before you could say just kidding.

This post and that video have taken things heavily out of context. The conscription is a tradition a tradition part of our culture and it has always been like this even before feminist movement was a thing. There has been talks regarding getting women in to the calligns. Women will not be conscripted because most of them can't survive the basic physical training. Conscription will not end. It is a gender neutral proun and has always been. None of this is because of the new goverment. The conscription is part if our culture and will not go anywhere.
