Yes, I agree. I’m more talking about the mindset that these men have, not what’s “objectively” correct. When you’re in a situation where you constantly get rejected, you’re going to feel like it’s inevitable, because that’s what the evidence says. You have to essentially “delude” yourself and have “irrational” faith.

The big difference is the expectation of success (or lack of). If you’re shopping and (in your head) are 100% sure that the clerk isn’t going to help you, you’d feel like you’re wasting their time/upsetting them for no reason. Similarly, if you feel like the woman is going to say no for sure, you’re putting her in the uncomfortable position of having to let you down gently. It “exists”, but he’ll essentially be crippled for life. I don’t think that’s a worthwhile tradeoff to make… The other surgeries are not as bad, but overall, it’s not as clear cut as “spend money -> become more attractive”.
