It's not really a liberal vs conservative debate. It's on a debate team, and the only goal is to win. I could get the pro-immigration side, I could get the anti-immigration side.

If I win I get a better grade.

Thank you.

9th grade high school. We do multiple debates, on each side. Two for immigration, two against.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 09:24 PM
1

Huh. I never thought of it from the point of the foreign country, but I could run that.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 09:10 PM

Goddamnit, you're right. Forget being friendly, I should go and rape the judge, that's sure to get them on my side.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 07:40 PM

bribe the judge with my friendly beta make appeasement Yes, because that's exactly what I said. My only wish is that my opponents are as retarded as you are. Then I could win easily.

That's a good strategy... leaving the debate when you're losing. I'll have to call my opponents out if they do that.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 07:15 PM
1

Yeah, no. In novice policy debate, you're given all the evidence to begin with. That's how it works at my school and every other school which partakes in my city's tournaments. In the other categories, ld and PF, you have to do your own research, but not in policy.

The point of debate class isn't to research facts, though, it's to learn to speak well and sell bullshit.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 07:03 PM
1

Okay, thank you.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:45 PM

It's not our teacher, debating is like a separate class run by students. The girl who runs the class gives us the research and sets us against kids from other schools. I'll doubt she'll make the anti-immigrant argument impossible, because if we lose she looks bad.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:39 PM
1

Ah, okay. Should I do this during the debate by quoting a lot of statistics and acting more assertive?
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:30 PM
1

Hmm. Well, I don't know which side I'm on, so I could either be for more immigration or less immigration.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:28 PM
1

Ah, okay.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:24 PM

Oh. The evidence is provided by the teacher.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:24 PM
1

Thanks. Any other tips?
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:21 PM
1

Thanks. It's only judged by one person, but I'll look more into body language and imposing myself against the opponent while making the judge like me more.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:17 PM

That's funny, but that would never fly. It's a formal debate. Oh well.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:14 PM

Thank you.
/r/askTRP27/12/18 06:13 PM

Thank you. We don't know which side we're on, but I'll read up on the subject.

Elaborate? We get more points and a better grade if we win.

I'm really not sure what I'd be good at. I'm 5'8, supposed to be 6'0, pretty skinny but strong, pretty fast but not great endurance.
/r/askTRP18/12/18 11:18 PM

Which one? I don't really care which one.

In-school: Soccer (pretty good, has a following with the girls but is ridiculously hard to get into), basketball, and baseball is the same. Football's technically no-cut, but there are so many football players that only the really good ones (the ones who've been playing their whole life) get to play. Nobody cares unless you're one of them. Wrestling isn't that great, and nobody really cares about it. Same with swimming, water polo, and golf. Track and cross country are the 'eh' sports. Outside s…

Which sportt?

I don't know, but like I said, recognition is the only thing that drives me to do things. I don't really have any inner ambitions, so it's looking smart that drives my getting good grades and all that.
/r/askTRP18/12/18 03:48 PM
1

The problem is, if I did what I actually wanted to do with my life, I'd spend my days in bed watching netflix and jerking off. It's recognition that helps me achieve anything.
/r/askTRP18/12/18 03:43 PM
1

Yes. Having goals for the type of man I want to be is being an attention whore.
/r/askTRP18/12/18 11:33 AM
1

Huh. You're partially right. The only real to ways to stand out at my school is soccer (with the normal kids) or debate (with the smart kids).

I heard rowers I'll ift weights as part of their training though, so I can work it into the schedule.

I already read the sidebar. For the time being, high school and college, this is who I want to be.

What extracurriculars will help me then?
/r/askTRP18/12/18 11:26 AM

What are the cooler extracurriculars?

Should I stick with rowing or something else?

Being my school's golden boy will make me happy.

Try Mark Manson.

Hmm, you're right.

How so?

Doesn't waking up at 5 am every day to get on a lake and do something that hurts like hell for an hour bud discipline?

What are the chances of me ever getting into a street fight?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 04:05 AM

True, you're right. Thanks.

You’ll still make a good crew That was very punny.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 03:04 AM

Would you prioritize that over getting a scholarship though?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:59 AM
1

What do you mean?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:56 AM
1

Makes sense. Might try rock climbing.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:55 AM
1

Being honest, I'm not really interested in learning to fight, but I am interested in the benefits.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:54 AM
1

For rowing, I'm thinking doing lightweight rowing, since I'm supposed to only be about 5'11. Is that a good idea?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:52 AM
1

Damn. This is a hard choice, with lots of good benefits on both sides.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:47 AM

Damn, this is a hard choice.

Missouri.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:42 AM
1

Hmm. I'm not sure I'll get a scholarship, but definitely a higher chance than with martial arts. Thanks.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:40 AM
1

Why?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:37 AM
1

You are right. That makes the choice so much harder, because it's a good body and possible scholarship vs mental toughness.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:36 AM
1

Nice.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:22 AM
1

Thanks. What are you studying at Princeton?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:16 AM
1

I mean, I think there may be other martial arts. Either way, is a martial art worth giving up an extra jacked (lifting plus a sport that gets you even bigger/better) body and a possible scholarship?

. im in princeton fyi Haha, I'm preaching to the choir then. I already have some shit going on regarding clubs/activities- I write trading algorithms, invest, and have an internship with a professor.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:13 AM
1

Why?
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:12 AM
1

School's easy. I'm in all APs, get As without trying, have a 1530 SAT. But to get into a good college I need sports or clubs as well. That's partly why I'm asking.
/r/askTRP30/11/18 02:02 AM
1

You're entirely right that learning to fight is incredibly useful. Still if I get good at rowing, it's great for my body, and I can get recruited for it. I'll have to mull it over.

That's up to my parents, though, not me.
/r/askTRP29/11/18 11:27 PM

But seriously, what's a good hobby to pick up?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 11:19 PM

We don't have those where I live. What else?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 11:17 PM

What do you gt by being sarcastic?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 11:14 PM

Would you suggest it over rowing?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 10:52 PM

What's a carnival?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 10:52 PM

I do.
/r/askTRP29/11/18 10:51 PM
1

Also, what are your thoughts on rowing?
/r/askTRP29/11/18 10:01 PM

Thanks. I'll try getting to class early so I can greet people well.
/r/askTRP26/11/18 12:22 AM

Will they test you for social skills when you apply?
/r/askTRP25/11/18 11:10 PM

That's a great idea for long-term learning and improvement. But what about some things I can do short-term to improve? I'm tired of screwing up at school and losing potential friends.
/r/askTRP25/11/18 11:04 PM

What do the kids at your school respect, other than basketball, fencing, and money?
/r/askTRP13/10/18 06:27 PM
You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
