hahaha my girlfriend is of sikh descent, and I use that all the time. (My girlfriend is sikh!! I mean yeah, she's sikh in the head, but she's also punjabi...)

I've been taking cold showers for about a month now. Part of the motivation was from flinch, another part of it came from watching a Sikh guru on YouTube (I'm Atheist, but his passion and zest for life is just so infectious!). yeah absolutely! it's definitely no excuse; but I think the closer we get to an accurate explanation the more effectively we can deal with the problem. so, for example, responding "yeah, you're just a shit parent" won't work

I have a different interpretation- your explanation implies that the parent is aware of her fuck-up and consciously chooses to deflect attention. I don't think this is always the case. I blame cognitive dissonance. A parent sees himself or herself as a responsible caregiver, and simply can't imagine putting his or her child in any sort of danger. As such, the most convenient/Occam's Razor answer is that the other person must have ill intentions- because "I certainly don't!"
