Yeah, some of the examples you use for sexism against men (as pointed out by others) are actually criticisms of feminism/women. Others, like the bit about not supporting a vote for men, were satrirical in order to demonstrate that sexism against women was unfair by reversing the normal target (hence it being released during the time women were fighting for suffrage.) I think it's wonderful you're trying to open a dialogue with her, though, I have a hard time approaching the topic of Mens' Rights…

I think this is a valid point, and the joke did set off a little alarm in my head about downplaying unwanted advances towards men, but it also makes me happy that women's sexuality is a comfortable thing to joke about. Making fun of creepily sexual women the same way we do men seems to be a step towards equality to me.

I think this probably has a lot to do with the way media/everyday women are more comfortable with talking about their sexuality. Books like Shades of Grey have been popular forever (see: Harlequin), but now we're willing to talk about these things in a relaxed, even humorous way. Twihards and romance novel fans no longer feel the need to hide these "indiscretions" from people, and so it's becoming ok to joke about. TL;DR: People are joking about lady boners too, WOOO

Not gonna lie, seeing this in my inbox and not remembering the context was so terrifying/confusing. Actually, still rather terrifying in context.

I had a hard time at first with MRA stuff because most of the threads I would see devolved into across the board woman-bashing, but after being able to learn what the core values of the movement are I supprt it. I know many women who have similar issues getting to the actual point of the movement for these reasons. It honestly takes a lot of effort to find legit info on the movement, and a lot of people either don't know how to find it or can't, as you said, see past the way things are said.

I think part of this could simply be that MRA hasn't been around as long and has had a harder time getting its foot in the door as a recognized institution. Feminism (while not adored by the masses by any means) is a recognized group with lobbyists and congresspeople. I think if MRA was as successful then it is entirely likely that this kind of legislation could be promoted. Also, to play devil's advocate, one could say that men's interests have been served by the govt/society for a long time an…

Also, I'm a little confused here as to how the mother didn't realize her baby was bleeding to death. I'm not a doctor, but shouldn't there have been some warning signs that would have led her to take the child to the doctor?

Is the YMCA and its female counterpart still happening? Also, are there any shelters that focus on non-heterosexual inclusivity? I feel like there would be similar fears of assault for a gay/trangender homeless person.

Yeah, it also creates a really weird (and harmful) thing that women can pretty much always expect to be wanted and that men will always be able/want to have sex. To grow up and actually realize that people across genders have different levels of sex drive was super surprising.

Sorry, I wasn't referring to the 40k directly I should have clarified on that. Custody isn't always automatic like that, at a certain age the children get to choose who they live with (or at least petition) and sometimes the more affluent parent doesn't want custody or it isn't granted for an outside reason. Simply because they were suddenly thrust into a worse financial situation doesn't mean they're a worse parent.

The phrase stay-at-home and house-parent were being used, which implied children to me. If there aren't any children in this scenario, then it becomes more of a case-by-case issue regarding alimony.

What I haven't seen addressed is this isn't simply to support the estranged partner, but also the children. If the estranged partner is now living in poverty, that's going to pass on to the kids.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't believe alimony is payment for the labor of being a parent. If the working parent does not have custody they are still responsible for that child's life, and since they are no longer directly parenting/supporting that child, I think it's fair to make a monetary contribution. A job that was previously done by two is being shifted to one.

I think we're ignoring a large part of the child support system-children from failed relationships. If a woman or man were to gain custody of mutually agreed upon children, then the partner not in full custody should be paying child support (yes, I think women should be held liable if they are in this situation. Being a single parent is difficult, regardless of your gender.)

Yeah, I definitely agree there's issues on both sides that are still lagging in regards to being treated equally.

Ugh, I really dislike things that hate on non-traditional men. It's unfair that people have to deal with such lack of acceptance in regards to expressing themselves.

I agree, it's hard to get someone to rally around the idea of everyone/everything. However, I don't think MRM is completely innocent either. While ideologically it may just be about promoting the rights of men, there is a lot of crap to wade through in the delivery of those ideas. I keep subscribing and unsubscribing to this subreddit because of that.

I think the problems you have with feminism can be found in men's rights as well, there are assholes in every group. You've always got to sift through different opinions/ideas before you find the ones you agree with, and I've yet to find any one that I think is completely right.

I don't want to put words in gtcompsci's mouth, but what I understood from the comment is they're discussing feminism from its inception (in which case suffrage would be an issue) and not necessarily just in regards to the developed world.

Couldn't the same argument be made against Men's Rights? I partially agree with this sentiment, which is why I really like some of the gender equality subreddits, but I don't think it's impossible to focus on some issues that pop up more with one gender rather than the other. Same for queer issues.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
