In addition to what everyone else said, it’s hard on the kids for their parents attention to be focused on a new relationship instead of them. I wouldn’t want to do that to kids who are too young to have any say in it.

I had a guy friend from college who would only eat bacon, bread, french fries and pizza. By the time we were 30, he couldn’t keep up with me on a hike and he was hospitalized for his colon starting to give out. I had urged him for years to get treatment for his eating disorder.

I’m 5’ 9” too, and when i was dating i would date a man of any height, didn’t matter to me. I ended up married to a guy about 2 inches taller than me. Not by design, it just worked out that way.

I dated one for a year without knowing it. We were both in our late 40s at the time. I hadn’t dated in a long time and I thought everyone was out by now but i learned that is not so. We were waiting for marriage to have sex because we ate both practicing Catholics so it wasn’t really obvious. He’s from a family that is an ethnicity where being out is especially difficult. I have sympathy for people in that situation but it’s not right to use people as a beard without telling them. If someone wan…

Never move for a man! Maybe into his house after the wedding. But not before that, and not away from all your support, you might need it.

You get treated as invisible after about age 45.

Stood me up, then asked me out again to apologize, i shouldn’t have agreed but i did, mostly out of curiosity at that point, and he had food dribbled down the front of his sweater and admitted to being high.

I agree, i didn’t let my now husband stay the night at my condo until a month and a half before the wedding when the wood floors in his house were being redone and a new bathroom was being put in. He and his cats came over to stay for a week while that was going on. No sex though, that was for the wedding night. One morning we woke up to the lovely sound of a vomiting cat. I busted out laughing and said so this is what i have to look forward too!

Well at least in the US, successful people are often attacked and hated. Successful people used to be someone to look up to, but lately they are denigrated. It would take a long time to explain why I think this is happening, but I think it is happening. Why would people want to be someone or appear to be someone that you have disdain for? What do the rest of you think about my theory?

My last ex boyfriend and my now husband gave me identical signals for the first year, but one was a future faker and one was not. I couldn’t tell. On the morning of my wedding, i was thinking “this is either going to be the best day or the worst day of my life!” Was that a healthy thought, prob not! When some of his family members came into the church getting ready area, i asked “is he here?” Just to make sure! Our 2nd anniversary is next week and we are doing great. And I was 50 when I got marr…

Good strategy. After my Mom died my Dad gave me half her assets and half to my brother because he did not need them to fund his retirement. He requested that I not tell any boyfriends about it until we were engaged. It was enough in assets to maybe make a difference in whether someone would be interested in me (two paid for homes plus roughly the value of those homes in stocks and bonds). I thought that was good advice. I’m now married and my husband pays most of the bills. He will get my assets…

That’s what I ended up assuming because he dumped me a week later. I asked my Dad’s opinion. “Do you think he was trying to tell me he was gay?” Dad’s answer was, “He wasn’t trying to tell you - he told you!”

“You look like a man and have man hands, and that’s why I’m attracted to you.” That was a WTF moment.

I got engaged in 2017 and married in 2018. It didn’t occur to me give him an engagement gift. I did get him a wedding gift (a kayak). He didn’t have to buy a ring - his parents gave him a family ring to give me.

I am sad that you have to deal with this and I wish it wasn’t an issue anywhere. I’m a white person and cannot say what it feels like for you and I can’t tell you it will all be fine. I wish I could. I think you are the best judge of what is healthiest and safest for you. It’s a worthy stand to take, to fight racist attitudes, I think you and your boyfriend should prepare and come to an agreement what action you both think it’s wise to take and how you will handle any pushback if there is any. I…

Yay! I’ve worked as a landscaper before to earn some money while learning in case I wanted to get more into horticulture. It felt pretty good. A lot of the customers appreciated a female on the crew.

I’ve met one and I’m 52. He and his wife are both attorneys. They keep that kind of stuff infrequent, weekends only, and not around people who don’t partake. I’ve known them 20 years and i have never witnessed them partaking. I wouldn’t know they did unless they told us. But i never did like pot particularly because growing up i never met people who did it who were better off than me or that i wanted to be like.

I was led on for a year by one of these guys. I thought in this day and age everyone was out, but i was wrong! Fortunately no sex between us, as we were both Catholic we agreed to wait until marriage. Well thats why I was waiting, for him it was a different reason!

He will get around to being shabby to you eventually, that’s what my 52 years of life had taught me. What really reveals someone’s character is how they treat people who are not useful to them or they don’t want anything from.

I hear you, me too. My husband and i are working, but he has been switched to overnights and i’m working more hours. We are stressed and tired. When i got home from work last night, he was in bed but had my coffee ready to brew in the morning, had put away laundry and done dishes, and laid out pajamas for me. So in the morning when he got home from work, i had breakfast ready for him then we had a session in the jacuzzi tub with incense, foot rubs, pumice stone, washing with oak and bourbon scen…

The first guy I dated who wanted to wait for sex turned out to be gay. That’s what I assume because he told me the reason he was attracted to me was because I “look mannish and have man hands”.

Wow this rings true! One of the reasons my ex boyfriend gave for dumping me was that he was mad that I rented an art studio and he wanted me to get rid of it and stop doing art. After my now husband and i got engaged, on christmas morning he showed me an art studio setup in his basement complete with new work tables and storage units! I am in a group show that opens tomorrow night. Tuesday night he drove me downtown to the gallery so i could help set up the show. Quite a different attitude!

I had a couple more thoughts. I think the op pretty much had the answer by saying in the subject line, “so-called” conservatives. I don’t know what a “trad-con” is. One of the reasons i like to read on reddit is that I encounter terms i don’t know. Since i’m working on a masters in media communications, it’s interesting to see what new terms younger people come up with and what they mean. Even though I’m married, i like to read this sub because i find it counter-cultural in a lot of ways and in …

I’m confused about your association of conservatives with not valuing education, where are you getting this impression from? Nearly everyone in my family has at least one degree, my family is full of teachers and my husband’s family is full of nurses, pharmacists and doctors. I’m working on a master’s degree now and have taken continuing ed classes almost continuously since getting my bachelor’s in 1993. My brother has a master’s.

I don’t see any push in conservatism to make either women or men low value or low achieving. True Conservatives value independence and making one’s own choices as much as possible. To do that takes education and skills. I think there is a big disconnect with what true conservatism is and what people think it is. And i think there are a lot of people who claim to be one thing or another and are actually hypocrites. If someone is using conservatism or religion as a reason to make women feel inferi…

I’ve never felt lesser within my family or religion. I stayed single until I was 50. I think strong families are one of the best things possible for humanity, but making one should be a choice, definitely. My mom was a wonderful mom and wife, but that’s not all she was. She was a teacher, accountant, singer, photographer and writer. A woman has more value than just a paycheck too. I find that attitude just as degrading as being only wanted for sex. My family and religion both taught me that I’m …

My Dad and my husband are similar in the following ways. They believe in paying for dates, paying most if not all of the household bills and doing at least half of chores. Both are devout Catholics. Both are generous with charitable giving. Both active in church, both are ushers and communion ministers, my dad is in the choir and my husband was formerly in his church choir. Both are Knights of Columbus members (as is my brother). Both reject porn. Both have had second jobs as coaches and teacher…

When I wrote my post above, my husband was downstairs doing the laundry. We don’t have kids. We both work, and I own two rental homes. The boyfriend i had previous to my husband didn’t approve of me owning property. He was liberal. My husband is conservative and he doesn’t pressure me to sell my property. I’m working part-time because I’m also working on a master’s degree. My husband pays most of the bills and we split chores. There won’t be any kids because i didn’t get married until i was 50. …

It’s not normal, no, it’s emotional abuse. My Mom and Dad were married 44 years until my Mom died. They occasionally had fights but never called each other names or used swear words. I think it’s normal to fight once in awhile, but swear words and name-calling are too destructive.
