First one for me. I filed right after New Year. Kinda hit me by surprise today. I have been in a great mood in general since I started the process. Past couple days have hit hard. I have my teens today but they are both going out for dinner. I'll be hitting the gym. Maybe stop somewhere for a drink then watching the Last of Us. Such an odd thing. I have felt alone in my marriage for a while but having her presence there did a lot for holidays I think. Best of luck to you all. This sub has been a…

She is a small business owner who's business has been down for the past 3 years but she won't give it up for a higher paying job.

Thanks for the advice! Regarding the amount. I have met with a few attorneys to get a consultation. I make about $150k and she makes about 45k right now. That amount is after CS but my kids are in high school so that won't last long. Unfortunately I'll be on the hook for the alimony for about 15 years in Illinois. Which at my age may impact my retirement.

Thanks for sharing. I am also concerned things will change with her demeanor once numbers get thrown out and her realizing how much her lifestyle will have to change. I mostly worry about my kids. Their loves will take a major hot financially. I have always put them first in this but I am starting to feel I need my own happiness too. Then I'll be free but maybe too poor to do anything. I am a numbers person too and it would be difficult to keep the house after paying out equity to her but not im…

Thank you for the advice. Been worried about jumping in but I feel more like starting it every day. Mostly just worried of keeping my kids at the same High School. Can't figure how to get housing in my area if I am paying so mich support.

Good luck to you. It's so tough to find anything even remotely affordable right now. I hope it works out well. My kids are teenagers so not as difficult as having a young one but I would like to be able to keep them at rhe same school. That doesn't look good right now in this market.

Thanks. I think you are right and would rather keep the money with her and the kids instead of feeding the lawyers. Just can't find a way to make numbers work for after if I am paying out that much. At least with the housing and rent the way they are right now.

Thats good to know. I didn't know that all the finances and food have to be seperate. That kinda stinks as we have been seperated for almost 2 years but both in the same house. I'll look in to getting some lawyer consults but hope the mediation works.

With the parenting marriage? I asked if she wanted to try it and sent her an article on it. We were headed for divorce and asked if she would like to try it before getting divorced as it seemed good for the kids. There was realization at the time that neither of us could keep the house alone. The main reason I do it is to stay in this house with the kids

Thanks! Especially about the debt. I ahve heard that in a few responses now. I have been doing a parenting marriage with her for over a year now. We both date people and have a parenting schedule. We also still go out together with friends. The hard part is the kids are happy, 2 high schoolers. The original thought was to wait a few years until they go to college. I don't know if I can wait that long anymore. I am able to get some dates and go out but it gets old not being able to have a lover o…

Thank you! That is some good advice. I am worried that she will not be as amicable once actual numbers are getting thrown out.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
