No, wives were properties of their husbands. Coverture was a set of laws that said that a married woman's identity was “covered” by her husband's. Under the law of coverture, a woman's legal rights were subsumed by her husband's when she got marriage. Women are more interested in working in jobs that require relations, empathizing, care, or communication with people. Men are more interested in working in jobs that require systems, objects, or physical ability. And STEM is not 99 percent men. STEM sectors like biology and medicine is around 50 percent women.
