i imagine they were referring to this "we have many disagreements with each other, but are able to unite on some core issues in support of basic rights" and this "You don't cut out supporters who disagree with you on one topic but agree with the idea" but they would need to elaborate to indicate exactly what they meant

Good question. Seems counter-intuitive to me, that this is being brought up. Long hair has always bounced-as a concept in my mind (on men)-between a feminine deal and not one.
