To caveat, I have no formal education in Finance so I'm at the mercy of the quality of info I've been able to read, and my ability to digest and piece it together to make sense of it - I invite anyone more knowledgeable to please correct me where I might be wrong. Supposedly the banks were cash strapped (from an operational standpoint) after "quarterly tax obligations and bond settlements" so they needed overnight loans to balance the books...and stay solvent.
