I can only comment on the people I know in Japan who are all around my age (twenties) but it seems to me that women are overprotected and suffocated in many ways. The Japanese dormitory used to have a cage around the girls elevator is strange example. The situation is bad for women who want to be anything other than a wife or a waitress. Quite an extreme view if you ask me but some parts of it definitely ring true. The whole "man does the job, woman stays at home" stereotype is taken to extremes in Japan. If you go out and about in the daytime you see 90% women. I think it's crap for both genders really, in different ways. Men who buy into this idea have to do incredibly long hours at work.
