In practice, studies have shown that social support systems & personal relationships make a huge difference in someone's level of happiness & life satisfaction. Instead of saying you work in IT, say what you actually do, and enable others to do. For example, if you're working on IT for a bank, tell them "I maintain the computer systems & networks that transact hundreds of millions of dollars safely & accurately every single day." You seem like a guy who gets uncomfortable when you're put on the spot, and have to think of something interesting to say. This is pretty common, but it's also a hugely beneficial skill to have.
