Think you need to get your data checked. You have to earn over $240K a year to pay the highest tax rate in Norway, 47%, which is NOT middle class. The middle class ($35K-$80K) pays 25-35%. AND get free healthcare and education. EDIT: Sweden and Denmark tax the upper middle class heavier, and Norway have done so in the past. However, the point still remains, you fare much better with a middle class income in Scandinavia than the US.

The middle class is not taxed more than the american middle class, and still get free healthcare and free education, meaning more of their income is free to use on other things than insurance and a college fund for their kids. When you say post-wall age, I assume somewhere around 32-35.
