It honestly depends on the application, which is what you'll find from studies. If you get abused (i.e. hit whenever a parent is mad), that's one thing. If you act out and get pain as a punishment, and it's consistent (and not excessive), that has been shown to be beneficial.

What driving intoxicated? I fully realize that - I had planned to stay the night at a buddy's house, but another (former) friend started talking shit about my (now) wife, and given the option of beating his ass or just heading out, I chose the latter. Much to my dismay... apparently should've just beat his ass. My point is - had I hit even another vehicle, let alone a child on a sidewalk, I would have expected much harsher penalties.

6 month suspension, $2k fine, and 5 years probation??? I was .02 above the legal limit, didn't hit anyone or anything, I was doing 8 mph above the speed limit heading into a 10 mph increase... and I got a 6 month suspension and $5k in fines. Only a year probation though; guess that's just male privilege at work!
