I think the window per cycle where it doesn't work is only after the woman has ovulated. So it avoids a lot of possible pregnancy (every situation where ovulation happens in the days after having sex). No contraception is perfect. It's always a numbers game. People should also know plan B doesn't work at all if a woman was already ovulating during sex. It works by preventing ovulation from happening after taking the pill. That's what's baffling. Even if a charge didn't stick, there could be so much stuff to pin on her. If she got prosecuted hard, and the trial failed, I could understand, might not even be pussy pass (maybe just a good defense, bad prosecution, whatever... sometimes people walk). But here it's like nobody is trying. She got a slap on the wrist (or even less than that). And they're not trying to pin any other charge, not even to pad someone's statistics.

Yeah that and filming Lord of the Rings. All the interesting legal oddities I hear about are from the USA (but to be honest, with all their overlapping jurisdictions, and local and national politics that are more about grandstanding than results, they have a perfect system to come up with the weirdest stuff).

I think that would depend on the jurisdiction. For instance, in some places aggravated rape (like on a toddler) might carry life (or a few decades). Also depends on the different counts (abuse, rape, distribution of child porn, manufacture...) on which an offender is convicted, and whether the sentences are served consecutively or concurrently. Plus there could be multiple counts of abuse or rape on the same child. Quick example of a guy serving 36 years for raping a kid over a period of 3 years…

I even think that in the sentence "she did it to her own son for money to buy a laptop because some guy asked" everything is an aggravating circumstance. And I'm not saying "put her in a dungeon with scorpions and throw away the key" (I believe in rehabilitation over punishment) but even one year in a jail with the best treatment program ever won't be enough to get her help for the kind of acts she's able to perform (just for her amusement).

It's not about "using" gender to avoid consequences. It's about the consequences being different than for a male in the same circumstances (all things being equal). But I think that we should check in that specific jurisdiction how juvenile male offenders are treated (in some places for violent crimes they abuse trying boys as adults for instance, but it also disproportionately targets boys from minorities, when compared to a white boy for instance).

Never move to France. There you can't even get a DNA test without a court order. Like, as soon as you accept the paternity of a child (if you don't contest it in court right away), it's yours forever. I'm from Europe. Where I'm at someone can get alimony without even being married. Like if anyone supports you financially or houses you, for any reason, they don't have a right to just cut you off and you could sue. But it doesn't happen often (mostly because people either don't know this law, or still have some decency).

I agree with you. Jail is not always the right solution for everyone. There is sometimes more to be gained from having someone repair or at least repay the damage they've done (male or female). But letting people go totally free after something like that is clearly not a good idea.
