I don't really want to, but the upshot is that because sample size is only 171, it could just be chance. If you divided the country randomly into groups of 171 kids, about 2% of them would be that unbalanced in favor of girls and 2% in favor of boys, even though 50% of the total are girls. I don't mean to minimize the suffering of those who've actually been falsely accused of rape, but I get bothered by persistent references to an "epidemic" of false accusations, as if we have strong evidence that being falsely accused rape ought to be high on the list of things for me, personally, to worry about. By all means, draw attention to the problem, challenge rape shield laws as a corruption of our standards of justice, and so on. But keep some perspective.

If 2% of rape accusations are false, I doubt it's fair to say that there's a very real epidemic of false accusations. For example, if the base rate of false accusations for violent crimes is 5%, then 2% false rape accusations would represent an area we do pretty well in. "Between 2% and 80%" is just another way of saying "Who the hell knows?"
