Agreed. I was in a unique situation where the employer was on a dead line. They eventually just spilled the beans and said "We can't pay more than X." So, I trimmed off a few percentage points and made an offer.

I use this tactic when negotiating my pay rate for a new contract. By not saying a word (almost literally) and allowing the recruiter to talk more, I easily walked away with an additional $30k when all is said and done.
