Part of me was like, eh, I don't want to change diapers anyway, so it works out for me. Another part felt like it was viscerally insulting, as well as illogical that they'd even hire someone they felt could be that kind of risk. They didn't even drug test me before I worked around small children, yet the diaper thing was a policy? I'm a lot older now and find it more insulting on principle. I will say, a lot of the parents expressed shock that a man was working there, but as far as I know, none …

I worked at a daycare for three months in late 2013. I wasn't allowed to work with the children under three because I wasn't allowed to change diapers.

To be fair to that person, a lot of JP's advice is tried, true, bread-and-butter sort of psychology stuff. Clean your room, stop drinking, don't lie all the time - these are hardly things you need a source for. His original draw was that he didn't sugarcoat anything or come off as a "self help" guru. It turns out ailing men responded well to "this is gonna suck to hear, but you need to hear it and it works."

His crippling drug addiction was to benzos for anxiety. He was prescribed those because his wife is dying of cancer. There's a bit of context needed for that particular flaw.

I think he has a major issue with clarifying his point and highlighting the nuances. For instance, the "don't protest for social change!" bit. What he actually says is get your head right before taking on such a massive project as protesting a status quo. But that's really too vague for people to not draw morbid conclusions. I mean, no one is ever going to completely get their shit together. Even the most high-performing of us are works in progress. But I've long thought that a prevailing issue …

Oh, weird. I'm sure it's nothing. Probably better to bury it deep inside and hope nothing comes of it. This scaffolding isn't going to erect itself, and you've been on break for 17 minutes.

Meanwhile, I just saw this article when I opened a tab on my laptop. Now I get to seethe in frustration about it. We still have a long way to go before these mindsets are dead and buried. And, of course, all of the people who once subscribed to them will act like it never happened. It took all the way to the third sentence to tip their hand, with the phrase "male crisis du jour." I scrolled back up, saw the author was a woman, and settled in for a loaded read from someone who had zero idea what …

No man alive created any of women's problems, but we're expected to care about them and be feminists/allies. Funny how that doesn't seem to reciprocate. Women aren't responsible for solving any problems, but an increasing number of men aren't playing ball with the feminist rhetoric anymore. If all this oppression really does exist on your end, the last thing you want is for men to realize "you know what? Not my problem. My life goes on regardless of whether or not I give a shit about women's pro…

There really is no substitute for a good cry. People who willingly fight the indulgence of it are missing out. But for me, crying is a hard reset. It takes some building up to, and then I have a sort of "this is bullshit and I can't seem to get anyone around me to understand why" breakdown, which seems to inject a little bit of cope into my veins. It's also exactly that; coping. It doesn't fix anything, or even open a path to fixing anything, most of the time. I know therapy is just good, practi…

Careful with that "water is wet" business. You're likely to start a debate as hot as toilet paper roll orientation or is a hot dog a sandwich.

Fuck Andrew Tate and Greta Thunberg is awesome. That's my stance. But if some wholly unpopular female gets blasted by a much-loved male figure such as Keanu Reeves or Tom Hanks, and he justifiably calls her a "fat little bitch" because she just picked a fight and said something offensive, the perception of him IMMEDIATELY changes. Andrew Tate is all about hyper-masculiniry and all that stupid shit, so it makes sense that figuratively hitting him in the dick is the most effective move, because yo…

I don't have a real-life example filed away, although I can try to think of one. It's one thing to say you want to help and be linked to literature, then just ask for the cliff notes. That screams being performative and not giving a shit, and it's insulting to the person who took the time to give you the benefit of the doubt. I've seen occasions of asking for the literature itself be met with "find it yourself." Well, I don't really know where to start or what I'm looking for in a subject I'm on…

Of course it's semantics, my question is... Why does that automatically make it unimportant? It doesn't automatically make it unimportant, but when most people get wrapped up in semantics, it's hair-splitting and nitpicking. That's what I feel this is. This is odd to me, you're taking a meaning of ally how it isn't usually applied. Especially when talking in terms of identity politics, this is often used to make people who aren't part of the oppressed group "shut up" and listen to be a good ally…

I guess I consider this some semantics and making a mountain out of a molehill. I realize there are connotational differences in saying the same thing that makes them very different, (self-aware vs. self-conscious, colored person vs. person of color, etc.) but I think the pursuit of male advocacy is a bit of an outlier. Our cause is one that's pretty well suited for slacktivism, to be honest. A lot of what we require is people to stop having such kneejerk aversions to hearing about male advocacy…

I'm not a victim of a sexual assault of any kind, but I think you're onto something universal with "what's next?" regarding how men typically approach problems. I need some sort of actionable plan. Going to therapy requires me to block out some time on a day off, or before or after work, paying a copay, and going through the mental stress of opening up to a stranger who, despite good intentions, I suspect sees us as a paycheck. And that's all very taxing, but I'm going to this person because the…

It really bothers me that this distinction isn't made. The conversation is dominated by some variation of "men need to open up to one another/support one another." I can't recall a time I've ever intentionally been made to feel less masculine by another man since high school. If it's ever happened, it was done to me by such a forgettable and faceless caricature of an insecure southern man, that the lack of connection to reality was humorous. It's always been women who has emasculated me - many t…

The problem is we're already being convinced to see the error in our ways. That's the entire effect of #MeToo. That's why saying anything anti-feminist (not anti-women, anti-feminist) in the place of work could result in your immediate firing. It's why you can't engage in any discussion about this. This place was founded as a respite for all that, as a way to bounce ideas off one another in our own space to talk about what we can't talk about in mixed company. There's an inherent amount of bitte…

I think maybe it's more the idea of if we're valued because of strength and our utility to build and defend society, then does that make women less useful than us? Obviously, the answer to that is a resounding no. We need desperately need women, just in different ways than they need us. But no one is immune to insecurity. You see this same scenario play out with people who say all lives matter in response to BLM. The struggle makes them feel less valued somehow. The only difference is those peop…

What this makes me think of is that "Male Advocates" should do a better job of mentoring men that act in ways that are destructive within our society. It's interesting you said this, because it's a good look into the way we've all be subconsciously trained to view male advocation. People equate male advocate to MGTOW, RedPill, or the incel community. You have to double down on making all these concessions and being extra civil, watered down, and submissive to show that you're "one of the good on…

There are traditional jobs for men. Immerse yourself in rewarding careers such as: Virtually all aspects of construction, where you work in the unforgiving elements and ruin your body before you're out of your 40s. Perks include: -Carrying 100-200 lbs of shingles up a ladder to stand on a steep roof. -Pain pill addiction after your body gives out on you. -Pour a 100 lb bag of cement in an awkward, bent over position. -Loss of limbs or instant death with one false move at extreme heights or aroun…

My issue with it is more along the lines of being traditionally masculine is a-ok with society when a woman needs something and a man has nothing to gain. All that strong and independent shit goes out the window when a drunk and aggressive guy approaches you and your girlfriend, and she's suddenly death-gripping your arm and hiding behind you. But climbing the corporate ladder because you're confident, assertive, and treat women in the office as competent competition instead of delicate little h…

I don't get it. Does it work differently in Canada than the US? Men aren't allowed in many shelters. And so what if their stay is longer? That means they're likely homeless longer, lol. Society doesn't "take care" of men, so why WOULDN'T their stay be longer? Or does the author think that life is like the YMCA song? We're going there to have a good meal and do whatever we feel. And like you said. Go to a skid row. Look around at camps and where they congregate. It's mostly men outside the shelte…

Yeah, I'd never have to clean under my fingernails if I cut my hand off. Hygiene issue solved. A statement like that is a litmus test. If you say something that fucking stupid, you're not intelligent enough to partake in a serious conversation about a subject that affects lives in a meaningful way. Try again next year. Edit: not "you" as in the person I'm replying to, if that didn't come off as clear.

I've said this in another comment: the left lacks strong leadership from top to bottom. Even if I agree with a lot of leftist sentiments, the way they go about presenting themselves ends up being childish, hypocritical, and even illogical many times. It's a weird situation where we're not really better than the right in a lot of backwards ways, but we're also too passive-aggressive and milquetoast to go as far as the right is willing to see the results they want. So the left ends up looking like…

The worst part is making a man feel like less because of something he can't control is directly contributing to toxic masculinity, which directly contributes to the patriarchy. These are the two malignant man-things that they attribute to basically every problem, so why are they so content to contribute to it? Why is no one allowed to bring this contradiction to light? It's the same with "cucks" in their little group name. It's shaming people for something completely harmless just because it con…

It really is amazing, isn't it? Under the allegations of patriarchy, most gay and bisexual men can't thrive because they don't have the "toxically masculine" traits that require them to subjugate women and teach the top of the food chain. They glean no benefits from their own existence, as they can't live up to what society expects of men, but failing to meet the expectations that have been declared as bad yields no upside. It's the same with autistic men. They can't be "real" men when you look …

I understand entirely. I do see men there posting about their issues and getting support, but it's always with a weird nod to the patriarchy or what have you. I'll take discussing my gender-specific problems without the side of feminist approaval.

MensLib is decidedly not hateful, but I got soured on it because it's more than a little pandering to feminism. I'm tired of the milquetoast attitude, but I still recommend that sub (along with this one) when I bring up constructive male-oriented subreddits as proof male advocacy doesn't have to be like braincels/MGTOW/redpill. I know I'm not the only one here who feels that MensLib has shot itself in the foot a bit, and it's hard for me not to go over there and start shit with them these days, …

I think the caveat there is men want to have sex with the lipstick lesbians. They don't want the butch defensive line ones. I personally know more than a handful of women who think men being bi is kind of hot. But it's a lot rarer (I always thought this was "more rare" and that "rarer" wasn't a word, but my grammar corrector on my laptop just told me otherwise) to find one that doesn't mind you being completely submissive and twinky. That's really more of a specific fetish than appreciating you …

Pretty sure MensLib has banned all mention of the Depp/Heard trial. That place was my gateway to nonhateful male advocacy, but it's got a very counterproductive slant that's obviously designed to keep men pacified.

I keep seeing the far left and the far right use the exact same logic to reach different, equally insane conclusions. Talk to a Christian fundamentalist about how the world can't be 6,000 years old, because we can carbon date fossils back tens of millions of years. It's entirely irrefutable in every way. What they'll say is something absurd like "the Devil put dinosaurs here." Try to compare the logical parallel between victim blaming men vs. women, or men vs. other men who also happen to be bla…

It does fall under the term "genital mutilation." It sounds a bit hyperbolic because it's become so widespread, but if you met the first ever circumcised person in the world, and they explained to you that half of the outer skin of their penis was removed at birth for reasons they can't quite explain or defend, your reaction to hearing that would be a lot different than it is today. Saying genital mutilation is definitely used to get a more visceral reaction, but the term isn't nonfactual. If th…

I'm not sure what the trends are these days, but when I was born in the late '80s, if you didn't have a circumcision in the US, you were part of a very small minority. And the whole reason I was thankful for being circumcised throughout my teens, was because I kept hearing about how off-putting it was to women. Of course, I think age and maturity likely evens this out. It's the same with men and periods. You're gonna be grossed out by that stuff when you're young and inexperienced. But I still g…

Blaming the Patriarchy as a complete catch-all and trotting out "internalized misogyny" when it suits is basically the same argument as the fundamentalist "the Devil put dinosaurs here." I can address and give credibility to men's roles in oppression and system issues, but when it comes time for women to pick up the check on a shitty thing in life, these inherently unfalsifiable ideas all-too-conveniently appear to save the day.

To be honest, I don't feel like this has turned the tables on any conversation. All it's done, for the most part, is add another hoop to mentally vault themselves through. I'm glad you're getting this impression, maybe I'm just more cynical in expecting a change of social atmosphere so quickly, but it seems to be treated as either an outlier - something people roll their eyes at when you bring it up as evidence - or something not even worth mentioning. I mean, look at this article that popped up…

Their response included the quote: "To think that a woman, solely by virtue of her gender, is now permitted 36 days/year for menstruation, in addition to their regular benefits, is absolutely insane to me." Seems pretty obvious their bone to pick is with the discrimination part. They included their own situation to serve as a measuring stick of actual real-world implications that they would have to face.
